Durarara!! Episode 08

08 – Life is Transient – Transient Dream Celty continues the search for her lost head, possibly finding something more important in the process. Oh yeah, other people lost stuff too… but it wasn’t as interesting.

Durarara!! デュラララ!!

We all search for something we've lost...

Find Durarara!! on: ANNMAL

Summary: This episode begins with Celty, dreaming of her lost head. As revealed in previous episodes, she has been on the search for her head since arriving in Japan, and does not feel “complete” without it. She explains that this dream has been reoccurring, and always ends horribly before she is able to regain her head. As morning rolls around, she sits staring outside, and is soon greeted by Shinra, who just so happens to be in a much better mood than she is. He tells her that since she has no jobs today, they should take the time to go out on the town. She disagrees, and says she would rather stay in and cook for him, to show her thanks for letting her continue to live there. Shinra is very excited to try her cooking, so she rushes off to look up a recipe online.

Shinra is not amused.

Next up we find Erika searching for Walker, which is basically just a very very small portion of the episode. Not much more to say about it, she just can’t seem to find him, and she has his lost cellphone. We do see Walker showing his inner Otaku a bit more, as he visits a maid cafe (the place where he apparently lost the phone). Jump over to Dotachin, who is doing a bit of detective work on the Pharmaceutical company that is apparently involved in human trafficking. He isn’t able to find much information, so he decides to leave, but not before he gets passed by a wanna-be terrorist. This person has taken it upon them self to attack the company, except he has no explosives… so he uses fireworks.

Leeeeerooyyy!!!

We return back to Celty and Shinra, ready to begin their food preparations. A new technique of hers is revealed here, in an unusual way. She is about to slice up some leeks for the the dinner, and materializes a black knife; similar to her scythe. Shinra instructs her to use a normal knife, so we sadly don’t get to see this new weapon in use. She completes the meal, and serves it to Shinra (sad that she can’t partake). He apparently enjoys the meal, but it isn’t perfect as the spices are a bit too much for him to handle. Celty gets upset, even though Shinra insists that the meal is good. She storms out, looking to clear her frustrations.

Quite appetizing.

Half way through the episode, we finally meet up with our protagonist Mikado. He is leaving school along with Anri, who apparently has had her shoes stolen again. Kida soon appears, and says that he knows who the culprits might be, so he runs off to search for them. Mikado and Anri decide to search their classroom, but to no avail. They have a small moment of romantic tension, and Anri decides to leave. Mikado continues his search after she leaves, and calls Kida to inform him that they’ve had no luck in locating them. As he leaves, he spots her shoes outside, on the athletic field. He rejoices and hurries off to get them.

Emotions flare.

Celty has met up with Shizuo at a recently vacated lot. They have a touching discussion about memories. Celty begins to realize that she is becoming more human, and is forming valuable memories even without her head. She heads home, looking to apologize to Shinra, but he has rushed off to a job. The job in question involves the fireworks terrorist from earlier in the episode. The Pharmaceutical company is having him take a look at the boy, who apparently attacked them out of suspicion of them kidnapping his girlfriend. Shinra begins to show a bit of regret in helping these people, but isn’t able to avoid the situation. The company most likely plans to keep the boy for “use”.

Regret.

The episode begins it’s conclusion, with Celty finding Shinra walking home. He asks her to accompany him for dinner, to get his mind off of things. They go to the Russian Sushi restaurant, and are presented with some rather interesting sushi, as the shop did not get their supply of fish for the day. Shinra enjoys his meal, and they receive fortune cookies at the end. Celty’s states that she will find what she has lost, while Shinras has a more depressing message, saying that his love will not come true. We are then quickly shown Erika finding Walker, and returning his cellphone much to his delight. Mikado returns Anri’s lost shoes, but she does not show much gratification. Presumably there is something going on that we do not know. The episode draws to a close with Yagiri talking with his girlfriend, who it is finally revealed is the current owner of Celty’s head. We get a quick glimpse of a happy dream for Celty, where she is finally with her head again, thanks to the fortune cookie’s prophecy coming true.

I'm Here.

My Thoughts: Well this was really quite the episode. We were given a lot of Celty character development, which is far from a bad thing. Her cooking escapades were quite entertaining, and as much as I prefer her with Shizuo, her and Shinra are very good together. Seeing her become more human is very interesting, and makes me enjoy her character a lot more. She is much less rigid in this episode, and is really starting to bond with other characters. Her moment with Shizuo was very special, and I think solidified her feelings of actually being able to be happy with out her head.

The lead trio had a very minor role in this episode, but I think it had some importance behind it. We begin to see that Anri may have some more hang ups about being emotionally open besides dealing with the loss of her friend. She clearly is forming feelings for Mikado and Kida, but I think this frightens her for an unknown reason. I hope that we get to hear more about this soon, I’m fairly anxious for their purpose in the series to progress.

All in all this was a very entertaining episode. It reminded me of all of the reasons I love Durarara!!, and gave me even more to continue doing so.

I give this episode 4 out of 5 stars: ★★★★☆

  • Congrats on your first post XD

Everything looks great, unfortunately I can't read it until I finally watch this hehe
My recent post Durarara!! Episode 08: Life is Transient

  • Celty is a pleasure to watch as always, and I like how they illustrated that she creates (and retains) her own memories without the need of her physical head. Now that we're learning more about Celty, Anri is showing to be quite the mystery…
