Sticks and stones....

20 – Hero With Mikoto proposing the bold procedure to operate on Sakomoto’s son, Sakomoto is not convinced since the verdict still stood that there really was no surgery that could save Azuma. What is Mikoto thinking and what sort of surgery would be able to do such a miraculous thing? Can he convince Sakomoto?

01saijounomeii-20 Summary: Sakomoto is shocked when Mikoto offered to treat his son, especially given the rare condition he is in. He explains that due to his son’s intestines getting constricted, they had to remove the small intestines in order to save him. With only 20cm of small intestine left, he isn’t able to absorb the proper amount of nutrients his body needs, which has left him hospital-ridden in order for the doctors to supply him with supplements. Mikoto knew all this however but his method would be able to lengthen the span of the small intestine, even though in reality small intestines only expand in width rather than length.

Sakotomoto thinks that Mikoto would propose the popular transplant option, but due to the low success-rate of patients staying healthy after the surgery, he has completely ignored the procedure. Mikoto replies by saying none of those options are what he is trying to do, as he says that he will extract the intestines and lengthen them by reconnecting the organ. This procedure is called the “Bianchi” procedure and essentially means cutting up the intestines in such a way that when they reconnect, they are actually longer than they were originally (refer to screenies for the proper breakdown). By using this method, Mikoto is confident that he can lengthen the intestines 5 times it’s original size.

02saijounomeii-20 Sakomoto ponders about this the next day in the office as he weighs up the pros and cons. Sena soon arrives for her shift and wonders where Mikoto is. Sakomoto says that since Mikoto had consecutive shifts, he was taking the day off, which leaves Sena in a state of panic since she didn’t want to be stuck in a room alone with the boss. Sakomoto sees this and tries to unnerve her further by saying that Mikoto is willing to leave pediatrics the night before. To his surprise though, Sena was pretty nonchalant about it, saying that she will just follow him when he leaves since he must have a reason to do so.

03saijounomeii-20 Later that day, Sakomoto consults his son’s primary physician and friend for some advice on the procedure and to his surprise, he agreed with Mikoto. Asking why, he simply replies that it’s all about trust, and he fully trusts Mikoto for all the volunteer work he does, which includes teaching the kids in the hospital on his days off. Sakomoto realizes this as he remembers his son raving about a teacher who dressed up as a favorite hero of his. When Sakomoto counters by saying why he didn’t come up with the procedure earlier, and that he is only pulling it up to get on his good graces, the physician says that he only just brought it up because he was waiting for his son’s intestines to expand enough for surgery. Hearing this, Sakomoto realizes how stupid he had been and gives his blessing for the surgery.

04saijounomeii-20 My Thoughts: I was perfectly on key on the last chapter’s prediction, since it actually did take the whole chapter for Sakomoto to finally succumb to Mikoto’s magic (who’s powers of persuasion are only second to Naruto’s at this point). It’s good to see that he finally came through but as a character he has been very inconsistent in the chapter. I thought he was actually gonna be more of a hard head and while he was stubborn, there were a few stumbles here and there that suggest he is not bad at heart. Then again, with such a sensitive subject matter, it was only natural for him to act that way. No matter how hard his shell is, with a loved one’s well-being hanging on a balance, anyone would crumble and drop their facade at some point.

While it did seem easy for Mikoto to get through to him (even though he didn’t actually have much face time at all in this chapter, rather he let others do the good-mouthing for him), I really hope the Sadame obstacle lies next for the surgery. Although this current plot point is only 2 chapters old, it seems a little stretched to me so I would love to see the surgery go through quickly next time. But, it wouldn’t be much fun if they don’t fall into a few more pitfalls huh? Sadame should provide the fireworks, even though his rep must be going through it’s paces after being made to look like a fool one too many times by Mikoto.

The way this chapter played out was very cliche, but I was fully ready for it from last week. We knew this was going to happen, it was just a matter of how. One thing of interest to me was how the end of the chapter played out, with that little monologue by Sakomoto to his kid. The way it was worded, it made it sound similar to the ending of Dark Knight to me. Here are the two quotes for a little comparison.

Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll hunt him because he can take it.

While it wasn’t fully the same, the way the panels and images were compositioned, I couldn’t help but be reminded of that ending. It was enough to make me chuckle lol.

Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight.

Anyways, like I said last week, I really hope there is a twisted turn in the next few chapters. It may be a little sad, but we need to see Mikoto fail at some point. And wouldn’t it be more dramatic if he were to fail in the biggest surgery of his life? The life of his boss’ son lies in the balance and the possibilities that arise from complications in their relationship will make it much more interesting. Again, a long shot but I can dream can’t I?
