Chapter 489 – On the Brink of World War

Summary: The chapter starts in Myouboku mountain, where the great elder toad and his disciples are discussing whether or not Naruto should receive the key to Yondaime’s kyuubi seal. They are arguing that Jiraiya had requested that the key be left directly with Naruto in order for him to fulfill his father’s prediction that he will complete the Kyuubi jutsu. The great elder concludes that he would need Naruto to come over directly, as he sees it fit to disclose to him the future that he sees for him. In Konoha, Karin is now in the hands of the interrogation squad. Slyly, she manages to sidestep all the main questions by pulling out the water works which managed to fool some, but not the infamous Ibiki. He demands that she just cut to the chase and reveal everything she knows about Sasuke and Orochimaru, which she reluctantly agrees to in the end after she demands food.

Elsewhere, Tsunade is on a binge as she is busy eating as much as she can in order to regain the chakra she lost. Kakashi and Shizune soon joins in and Kakashi reveals how relieved he was that Tsunade woke up seconds before he was about to be announced as the Rokudaime. He reasons that Tsunade’s experience would be much more suited to the situation at hand. Tsunade herself is surprised that the other nin villages agreed so willingly in the formation of the alliance. She gets straight to work after her feast however, as she orders for a plan meeting in order to discuss tactics for the war.

On to Naruto, the blonde ninja has just been informed by Sakura at his favourite ramen spot that Tsunade has woken up and is all well. Hearing this, the owner offers free ramen to Naruto but as soon as he is about to dig into his food, he is instantly transported to Myouboku mountain. After being informed of the situation, he heads off to the great elder where he is told that he will meet with an Octopus and a person with powerful eyes. Fully aware of the future ahead of him, the great elder sees it fit to hand over the key to him. After Gamatora explains to Naruto the meaning of the scroll on his stomach, Naruto faces a tough decision as he fully remembers what had happened when he last opened the seal to complete the jutsu.

In Madara’s hideout, things get interesting as Kabuto reveals himself as he puts his plans into full motion. Now face to face with Madara, the two get into a sparring session but is cut short when Kabuto releases a jutsu that only the Konoha Nidaime and Orochimaru mastered, the Edo Tensei. With Itachi, Kakazu, Deidara and Nagato’s undead bodies appearing within their coffins, the tables seem to have turned as Kabuto now has the upperhand in the battle. He ends it by saying that this was actually just a performance act however, as he sees this spar as a potential recruiting session as he plans to join forces with Madara.

My Thoughts: Things still seem to unfold at breakneck speed as Tsunade is now back and fully in control of the situation. Good to see her back so soon and someone please give the woman some food! I don’t ever want to see that facade wear off lol. It’s good to see Karin’s charm hasn’t worn off since she seems to be the same old two-faced woman. I was surprised that Ibiki had time for her shenanigans. As the head of interrogation, one would think that he would have gotten the information using whatever means necessary but I guess Karin was a special case since she has a quick mouth and seems to be cooperative enough for the most part. I hope we get to see her used in Konoha’s side in the future but we’ll see how this develops. I guess it all depends on the validity of her revelations to the troops.

As for Naruto’s future, we all think that the person with great power in their eyes would be Sasuke but I for one hope that in this case he means Madara. I mean it makes sense since he’s been a thorn in the world for decades now so it only makes sense that he will be the one major threat to Naruto’s case. He wants Naruto’s Kyuubi so he may be the main threat but yea, it probably isn’t meant to be. Sasuke will probably be the person mentioned here since with the new sharingan implanted, who knows how much more his skillset will grow. With the infinite amount of Susano’o and Amaterasu that he can spam out now, he will definitely be a threat and with Madara implicitly saying that he will be the one to retrieve the Kyuubi for him, he is probably the immediate threat to Naruto in this context.

As for the tentacles/Octopus bit, there can really only be one explanation. Naruto may not know it yet but it seems like he will soon be face to face with someone as equally as obnoxious and spontaneous as he is. I fully look forward to their first meeting, since their personalities can either mean that they will be BFFs instantly or be at each others throats. I think this meeting is key for him to finally fulfill his dad’s and Jiraiya’s hopes, since Killer Bee is the only jinchuuriki alive who is able to fully maintain and control the beast within him. With Naruto learning of the secrets to controlling the bad boy, he will indeed complete “That” jutsu that has been foreshadowed since the first chapter of Shippuden. That is of course assuming that he accepts the key into his body, since at the end there he did seem to remind himself of the untold damages he has done to Jiraiya the last time they tried to complete that jutsu. If he masters it, it will be a great resource to the alliance, as they will have full power over two of the most powerful bijuus in existence.

Of course they left the best for last as the meeting between Kabuto and Madara means grave danger for the alliance. With Kabuto now in full control over Orochimaru’s past powers, he seems like the perfect candidate to partner Madara in their mission to destroy the world. I’m not sure if Madara would accept so willingly though, since both Kabuto and Orochimaru have a track record against Akatsuki. He will be fully aware of the fact that Kabuto will only be using their partnership for his own benefits and will undoubtedly betray him when the time is right (hell, he might even seek revenge on Sasuke for killing of Orochimaru). Either way, I think Madara is both strong and smart enough to minimise this threat since Orochimaru has always been a coward in the face of the sharingan. I’m not sure how much more Kabuto is able to bring to the table in terms of withstanding this sharingan but I’m pretty sure at this point he was able to drug himself enough to be immune to the doujutsu’s effects. Either way, it seems like things are getting very tricky for Naruto and co.

  Naruto learning how to control the kyuubi from Killer Bee… sounds plausible. I'm hoping that the juubi will show up at the final showdown though, so I'm thinking Naruto has to lose the kyuubi somewhere down the line.

    Yea, that's where Sasuke comes into it I think.

    I think Sasuke will successfully use his eyes to control the Kyuubi, but Naruto will probably claim the final victory. That is when Madara will swoop in for the Kyuubi lol.

    I really want to see the Juubi too, that silhoutte they showed of it in the past is just creepy
