Bleach ch399

200+ pounds of sheer brawn, muscle and power. Epic

399 – Deicide Isshin continues on with his battles with Aizen in epic fashion, while Gin continues to taunt and talk his way into Ichigo’s mind. It seems like the appearance of his father has calmed him down however, so it has no effect. Will the release of his bankai change his demeanor though?

01bleach-390 Summary: Aizen and Isshin continue to lock horns with attack after attack, as the intensity of their battle sends shockwaves through Karakura town. Isshin is showing that he is more than a match for Aizen, as he is able to easily repel his attacks as well as countering them with his own. On the other side of town, Gin continues to have a nice talk with Ichigo, mostly about how it’s been such a long time since they last fought. The last time they met, Ichigo rushed in fully enraged after Gin had cut off Jidanbou’s arm when Ichigo first attempted to infiltrate Soul Society. That was such a long time ago that Ichigo has grown incredibly strong since then.

02bleach-390 Ichigo however doesn’t remember the encounter fully, since as their swords met, he wasn’t able to feel into his Gin’s emotions. He mentions that up to this point, all his battles have been heartfelt as he feels the opponents on a spiritual level every time they locked swords. He doesn’t remember having the same feeling from Gin, therefore he couldn’t recall what exactly happened at the time. Hearing this, Gin states that instead of seeing him as an amusing kid, he was starting to see him as creepy. Gin then spouts off some questions asking if Ichigo knows the length at which his shikai could extend. Having no clue, Gin reveals that it could stretch up to a hundred sword lengths, giving him the nickname of “hundred-sheather” as a kid. He then reveals that his bankai is able to reach much further than that, totalling at around 13km.

03bleach-390 This managed to surprise Ichigo a bit but it wasn’t as impactful in metric terms. Gin then proceeds to show the extend of his bankai in real battle, as he warns Ichigo that he won’t be holding back this time. Releasing his bankai, Kamishininoyari (Killing Spear), Gin starts to show off the devastating power of his bankai, as everything within Karakura town gets sliced in half due to the range of his attack. Ichigo manages to block the attack somewhat as he reveals that a bankai of his own should be able to counter another. He then releases his own Getsuga bankai blast, which manages to strike Gin around the head and wounding him, leading Gin to remark that Ichigo was indeed a creepy kid.

04bleach-390 My Thoughts: This was a pretty damn quick chapter, although usually all Bleach releases are. Gin’s bankai is finally revealed and it really was just an extension of his shikai. Not much surprises there, unless you consider the range that it possesses as well as the potential devastation it can create in an all-out war. It would definitely have major effect in a large group fight so it probably has it’s merits. Having a long range weapon like that can be really handy, and it could instantly take out a whole army if need be. I was still a bit underwhelmed by it since Ichigo easily countered it with his own bankai. I guess Gin’s bankai really is the perfect embodiment of what he is, long and rail thin lol.

05bleach-390 I wonder if he really was holding back, although I think his bankai shouldn’t have that many hidden tricks to it. Maybe in order to improve it, he has the ability to pull out a hollow mask or a hollow transformation ala Tousen. That will probably be his final trump card, since his current bankai isn’t really as striking as it could have been. I gotta say though, Gin looked pretty damn cool at times in this chapter, particularly as he was stating his bankai’s name. Hell, he even managed to open his eyes a few times, leading me to believe that he might not be holding back as much as I’m hoping.

06bleach-390 Either way, I’m quite pleased at how Ichigo has been this chapter. Has he really matured after getting his head smacked by his dad? Possibly. But like he said, he has always gone into battles previously with reckless abandon, therefore coming into this fight with a cool head might end up being more rewarding to him. It seems to me like Gin is the rattled one instead, especially after Ichigo coolly dispatched his trashtalk. That’s one way to counter an arrogant prick, just ignore and forget about him the last time you met lol (although I wonder what Gin really is given how Ichigo didn’t really feel his presence. Maybe that might be a part of his strength?). Hopefully Gin will push Ichigo enough so that we can get to see that Hollow transformation of his. Maybe then we will get to see what else Gin is capable of.

As for Isshin and Aizen, this battle is looking downright beastly! Isshin is definitely the man and he has such a commanding and intimidating presence about him. Hopefully he manages to keep toe-to-toe with Aizen, it will be a shame to see him down for the count after Aizen’s showy attack in this chapter.

  • A somewhat unimpressive bankai especially given how Ichigo blocked it without using his mask. Gin better have some other tricks up his sleeves.

Isshin seems to be doing alright. I wonder if he has ever seen Aizen's release.

  • I think Gin's Bankai looked unimpressive only because he was up against Ichigo. Had he unleashed it on a lesser person, they might not have stood their ground as well as our protagonist. (A range of 13km is HUGE! Plus he manages it so effortlessly.)

As for Ichigo not "feeling" anything when he previously fought Gin, it might imply that Gin is indifferent when he fights. And the whole concept of Gin having his eyes close for a majority of the time (except for those few choice moments) is interesting because I think he perceives a whole lot more than others think and hopefully, it'll result in some fantastic fighting in the near future.

(And yeah: He shouldn't be one to call others creepy, haha. I like Gin, but there's something about him that's just unsettling.)

    • Lol it would be funny if his hollofication or hidden ability is to open up his eyes for a power boost. That would be a total crackup.

And yea, 13km is a very, very long radius. I wonder if the sword retains it's weight and size during it's extension, cos I don't think it's much fun to heave around a sword with that sort of range lol
