Kaichou wa Maid-Sama! 1-3

Hey look, a background that doesn't look cheap :'D

It’s time for your weekly high school shoujo fix (with a dash of meido, as well~)! The first few episodes were quite enjoyable, with two very memorable leads. To keep a long story short, boy meets girl, girl is crazy dictator at the local high school, boy discovers girl works as a maid, threatens to reveal her secret, and both of them refuse to reveal their feelings for each other for 13 episodes.

“My Secret” by Saaya Mizuno

OP: The OP was okay. I managed to live through the in-your-face glittery shoujo-ness (including, but not limited to: showers of flower petals, bland secondary characters, hair blowing in wind, flashy backgrounds, etc.). The animation is definitely nothing to call home about, but it works. I actually kind of like the character designs so far- although those school uniforms could have been better!

Genres: Romance, Comedy
Themes: Shoujo, Maids, High school life
Number of episodes: 13

I’ve finally caught up on Kaichou wa Maid-sama!, and it’s pretty good so far. I thought that the manga was pretty cute, but it didn’t really keep my interest for long. Most of the plot elements are nothing new to shoujo already, and it got a little too predictable for me to continue reading.

The Ideal Man. OMG HAWT <333

What I haven’t seen quite as much is such a dynamic female lead. Misaki has quite the character; she isn’t afraid to stand up for what she wants and boss people around. It was also surprising to see the number of scary expressions a girl can make in one episode.

You’re the one who’s scaring me, Misaki ><;;

XD

That’s about as refreshing as Maid Sama! gets, though. Although I’m LOVING Misaki’s crazy personality, she can be a little too authoritarian at times. I enjoy watching a good tsundere, but I had to resist rolling my eyes whenever there was a blushing scene. At least try to make it less blatant T_T

I think we all know who wears the pants in this relationship.

Awww I think they make a cute couple~ It’s so fun to see their personalities clash!

Imouto-chan is the exact opposite of her sister so far- I like her. She’s a tiny bit less one-dimensional than the rest of the students at Seika. Speaking of those students, I thought that the contrast between them and the leads was pretty jarring.

We have the boys…

…who are mostly dumb, sloppy, crude idiots.

Then we have Usui…

…who is talented, cool, hot, and popular.

Then there’s the meek, shy, quiet girls.

Who pale in comparison to Misaki’s wild temper and dictator-like authority.

ED: *drools*

Overall Thoughts: Generic. Oooh, I hate to use that word, since elements of any anime will pop up again and again in similar shows. Everything has just been so predictable so far and it’s obvious that Misaki and Usui are going to go from hating each other to proclaiming their ~*love*~ for one another soon enough. Or perhaps they’ll drag it on for a hundred chapters ><

I started reading the manga before watching this; it was decent, but I couldn’t find anything that warranted it’s extreme popularity. Although this may seem to be on the lower end of shoujo (Plot, characters, and production values-wise), it’s not that bad. The character interactions are fun to watch, as well as our Prez’s extravagant mood swings.

The following episodes were decent, and I was surprised at how Misaki could seem even more bossy. It was nice to see some new quirky characters as well- Misaki’s manager stands out as a thirty-something fangirl who looks about twelve.

Usui is ridiculously perfect (smart, cool, good looking AND adored by every girl at the school?), and I’m willing to bet our leads have got more to share on their own sad, troubled pasts (Just check out that ED!). While it’s not a stand-out of the season or a masterpiece, it’s mildly entertaining and I’ll be looking forward to more episodes :3

About

Just another teenage girl from a boring part of suburbia. Hobbies include referring to herself in third person and testing the limits of sleep depravity. She is a lot like her writing: awkward and cheesy. You can stalk her via twitter or contact her by email.

  • Shoujo is shoujo~ I'm personally just looking for this post to give me my fix of shoujo for the next few months and then I'll move on…but what better is out right now, right?
My recent post To Aru Kagaku no Glow

    • Definitely! Some things never change~ Maybe Summer will have some better shoujo offerings ヽ(>▽<)/

  • So many pictures! This anime looks cute, I love maids ;)
I can't help but think of Kamen no Maid Guy ahaha

  • Glad to see you got that IntenseDebate thing fixed up! ^^ You can blame the picture overload on my short attention span /orz

  • I don't remember her turning demon quite so often in the manga, or at least to such an extent. I also find it hilarious that Suzuna appeared more in episode three than she has in the entirety of the manga.

    ……..God the uniforms are ugly……………..

    • Yeah, me neither (I think I might pick up the manga again!). Though it's funny to see it animated :D

asdfl;l those uniforms are HIDEOUS. It actually makes me thankful for so many close ups >A<

  • Hellomotto says:

Haha, even though you don't like to use the word "generic," it's probably the mot juste in this context. Still, it's not like anyone was expecting a masterpiece or anything; viewers probably just wanted something to fulfill their japanese maid-fetishes along with their shoujo needs.
I actually don't mind Misaki. Aside from her obvious misandry, she's at least down-to-earth. Usui, on the other hand…Well, let's just say that I scoff every time I hear his name.
My recent post Nama-Ko In Super Secret Disguise

  • Well said,
i can't handle those blushing moments either – that just make her go way out of character…well at least for the earlier parts.
It seems like a good series soo far, but for me i feel as if the seiyuu for Misaki doesn't capture her "angry-boy-hating-mood-swings" side enough :S

  • I agree; some of her deredere moments are a little tiny bit overdone. It adds to the extremeness of her character, I suppose.

Haha, good point! It must take some skills to be able to capture that level of hate.
My recent post House of Five Leaves 2

  • I've read most of the manga and I enjoy this series, but it's not a series I think about often. At some point I may check back and see how far behind I am now in the manga. But to be honest I've forgotten quite a few details because I'm such a casual fan. I saw the first episode on the anime and thought it was cute, maybe I'll watch the rest at some point.
