Kaichou wa Maid-Sama! 4

So, this week we have a new character making an appearance! Things have been pretty quiet in Misaki’s life lately, and another screwball character will certainly shake things up. I’ve also noticed that the animation didn’t really bother me at all this ep. It suits the atmosphere quite well; light hearted, simple, and shoujo-y.The humorous parts are portrayed perfectly.

So this is Aoi~ Satsuki (Misaki’s boss) has quite the little “niece” (xD) on her hands. Obviously she knows how to entrance the fan boys. Aoi is apparently a famous internet idol, receiving thousands of hits a day on her site. I’m curious to see how Aoi will affect the main storyline (if she does at all). She doesn’t seem to fill any stock character positions I can immediately think of that would make sense to appear in a standard shoujo romance. Misaki and Satsuki’s reactions are hilarious- a good mix of awe and uncertainty.

Of course, Usui shows up eventually. Aoi is pretty smitten with him, but it seems like she’s more interested in having the ability to make anyone fall in love with her than having an actual relationship.

Aoi lays on the charm, but Usui responds in his usual deadpan manner. Turns out that the guy is also an amazing chef, too. And of course, we get some more Misaki x Usui moments:

B'awwww >< I love seeing tsundere! Misaki.

Hey, turns out Aoi is a trap. Did you see that coming? I did see some screencaps of this episode before watching, but he still looked like a girl so I didn’t catch on. (xD) I suppose if your domineering class president can be a moe maid, anything is possible. It really plays into the theme that everyone has their own little secrets. I wonder if Aoi will become a regular character; he shows up in the OP, after all. It seems like his appearances will be a little random since he doesn’t go to the same school as Misaki or Usui, and it seems unlikely that he’ll work at Maid Latte.

Misaki is such a cool senpai character~ I guess she must see some of herself in Aoi; it seems like they could be good friends in the future. I also loved watching Misaki beat up that purse stealer- it made us all remember how kickass she can be. Unlike Aoi, she isn’t interested in looking feminine at all. The contrast between everyone’s personalities does add a nice bit of chemistry to the show.

Overall Thoughts: I really, really enjoyed this episode. We turn away from school (and those horrific school uniforms! T_T) and instead focus on the maid café, which was a nice change of pace. The animation wasn’t stiff at all, and there was plenty of humor throughout. It was cool to see Misaki take a break from the all the RAAAGE against boys. Her chat with Aoi near the end was a nice display of her more down-to-earth personality; it’s nice to see her as a multi-faceted character. Now, if only we could delve a bit deeper into what makes Usui tick. We’ve seen Misaki go from a relatively calm person to bossy class president, and Aoi as a raging boy and adorable internet idol. Though, on the character-developmental front, it probably makes sense to reveal more about the mysterious love interest later on.

I’m beginning to wonder why Usui is so obssessed with Misaki. I mean, it’s not like their personalities seem compatible at first glance (though opposites do make entertaining couples). We’re roaming into single target sexuality territory now, with him…

a) Turning down numerous girls after several confessions;
b) Seeming to show up wherever Misaki happens to be,
c) Displaying zero interest in anyone else, pointedly shown by completely ignoring Aoi’s attempts to “seduce” him.

So, hopefully Kaichou wa Maid-sama! will avoid any unnecessary love triangle arcs (unless Usui gets a love rival… )(actually, that seems pretty likely xp). Not that I don’t find that type of plot interesting, but it’d be nice to see their relationship develop without that kind of drama. The show nails character interactions, and excessive drama isn’t always good for a fun show like this.

Next week:

It’s hard to tell what’s up next, but so far we have a strange looking Usui, more Aoi chan/kun, more baka trio, and more Yukimura abuse (poor guy).

I also enjoyed the episode a bit more than the others. As you said, the absence of school scenes were actually a blessing, and it was interesting to see Misaki in her "natural element" in the maid cafe, if you will.
I actually noticed that I started to laugh more during this episode than during the previous episodes. I think it was thanks to some of the Aoi interactions, but I'm not too sure.
As for Usui, he will remain an enigma; that seems to be part of the show's foundation (aside from the obvious premise of maid cafes and all).
When you say the show "nails character interactions," I'm presuming that you're talking about Usui and Misaki. I honestly thought that Aoi's interactions with the other characters were pretty bad and inaccurate. But that's just me.
Overall, another great post. Keep up the good work!

    • Usui is totally giving off has-a-tragic-past vibes so far. I should probably read some more of the manga but I don't want to spoil to much, haha. This was a very enjoyable episode! I love Usui's blasé reactions to Misaki's tsundere tendencies- I also thought some of her scenes with Aoi were pretty cute.

Thank youu! I'm still trying to settle with a writing style, xd

  • Trap alert D:

Thanks for your comment on my blog ;)!

Naturally, I'm also watching Kaichou wa maid-sama and I have to say though it looks and smells like pointless fluff and fanservice, it's pretty entertaining at the same time. From the moment I first saw the ending theme, I knew Usui was a 'dark past' kind of character. I love those kind of characters, but it doesn't look like this anime is getting serious in that way any time soon xD. Anyway, I'll keep watching :D!

    • Exactly why I'm watching it. It's nothing too deep, to be sure, but it's such an enjoyable watch. So lighthearted and fun~ I can't wait to learn more about Usui ;D

Ah, and it was my pleasure; I just love reading monthly impressions of a variety of shows.

    • Yeah, they’re definitely becoming a trend.

KwMS didn’t really stand out much to me at first, and a lot of the episodes are pretty skimmable. The animation is nothing special, but its a nice lighthearted watch o/
