Giant Killing 6

BEST......HANDSHAKE......EVER!

Well, this episode had me rolling on the floor laughing. I’ve always found the 80’s techno music that is the Giant Killing background music to be funny, but this episode was so much more. There was so much bad English in this episode so they threw some bad French in as well. But it doesn’t stop there, one of the managers was speaking something so poorly, that I couldn’t tell what it was, it sounded Dutch. Correction, it sounded like a Japanese person speaking poor Dutch as though they were a poor English speaker. Some of the character designs of the other managers were absolutely hilarious as well. What a riot.

The mascot only performs for women, great fun.

Summary:

The episode begins with Yuri waking Tatsumi up to go to a Managerial press conference for the Japanese Football League, something that he does not want to do. After being forced to go we are introduced to ETU’s former manager, Fuwa, who is about as slimy as they come. We are also introduced to the (Dutch?) manager of the Osaka Gunners, Dulfer. Dulfer is quite taken with Takashi and believes that he will do great things as a manager.

Mista ETU is rocking some new digs.

Then all the team managers have to stand up on stage and state their goals for the season in a way that looks very silly. When Tatsumi’s turn comes around he says ETU did terribly last year, so maybe they can’t win it. His nonchalant attitude gets a bundle of laughs from the reporters. He then says that everyone will write ETU off, which is exactly what he wants. He says that ETU has nothing to lose; they’ll play on a whole other level and beat the best teams, who will be forced to suffer through the embarrassment of being beaten by a team everyone has written off.

Who wants to be a Japan Football League Manager?

Yuri is once again stunned and embarrassed about Tatsumi’s arrogance, because she never learns. After the conference a French gentlemen walks up to Tatsumi and asks him if he would like to have lunch with him. Tatsumi asks who he is and he says he is a fellow manager. The Frenchman suggests Fish & Chips saying that when he coached in England he had it every day, however they get lost and end up having a convenience store sandwich instead. While walking they see children playing a game of football so they stop to sit and watch.

Dr. Poppor approves this message.......what is this I don't eve.....

The Frenchman asks Tatsumi who he thinks will win to which Tatsumi says the team that is losing. The Frenchman asks why and Tatsumi says that they run more emphatically and are having more fun; therefore they will turn it around. The Frenchman asks Tatsumi if that’s the kind of football he wants to do at ETU, Tatsumi says yes and the Frenchman replies that he feels the same way. Yuri comes along to find Tatsumi like always and is surprised to find him talking the Blanc, the manager of the Japanese National Team, they’re laughing together as though they are old friends. Tatsumi and Blanc part ways with Blanc saying that next time they will have Fish & Chips.

That............is a scary face....

That night the fans, known as the United Skulls, bring a large rolled up banner in as a surprise for the opening game the next day. Cut to the opening game and the banner is a huge ETU flag that covers a whole section of the stadium, the fans are behind ETU the whole way. Here we are introduced to a lady that the subs called Fujii-san, but I heard Fujisawa-san, so I am going to go with that. Fujisawa is a freelance reporter who is betting her career by exclusively following ETU and Tatsumi.

Having been under a giant banner before, let me tell you, it is a dark and lonely place.

Fujisawa says that the manager of the opposing team, Kurashi, is tricky and will be tough to beat. The game starts and ETU is looking strong, they have a few nice chances in the box but don’t quite capitalize on any of them. Our least favourite angry bald defender, Kuro, is about to claim a high flying dead ball, but it suddenly appears to gain air again and manages to sneak over the goal keeper and into the back of ETU’s net, and the episode ends immediately after.

He didn't growl this time, I'm disappointed.

Thoughts:

That was one hell of an episode, it was good as an episode in that I enjoyed it as an episode of Giant Killing, but it was awful at the same time. Anime is known for how terrible it is with languages other than Japanese, Senkou no Night Raid has awful Chinese and Engrish is very common as well. Eden of the East has the best Engrish I think I have ever seen in an anime. This episode of Giant Killing however takes the cake with butchering not one, but three languages. If anyone knows what nationality Dulfer was meant to be please let me know, I couldn’t stop laughing at whatever the hell he was speaking.

I think you have a funny face too!

Once again Tatsumi has proven to be awesome; some people might think he’s annoying because he’s arrogant. But I love that kind of protagonist and it is rare to get one. He doesn’t mince words and he doesn’t back down, Yuri is just going to have to get used to that. The way he laughed with Blanc without knowing who he was just shows how likable he is to good natured people, unfortunately Yuri took this to mean that ETU players will make it to the national team, but that’s because she is a bit stupid.

This anime loves its bright lights.

I am happy that they introduced another female character in Fujisawa as this was starting to become a real sausage fest. Anyone who knows me knows I am a fan of romance as well so I can only hope our favourite ETU manager can get some R&R time with either Yuri or Fujisawa in the long run. I need romance in a series and always feel that there is something missing when it isn’t there. I know that it is just me projecting but I’m a hopeless romantic so it can’t be helped.

Why are her and Kuro the only people other than Goalies who wear gloves?

I enjoyed this episode because it was fun and because it was awful. I hope the rest of the series isn’t like that but after two episodes of serious match time this episode was a fun break before the next match. A match that has definitely started off on the wrong foot, this cliff hanger is killing me; I wish it had at least shown what happened before ending the episode. Also, the thumbnail image is my favourite part of the episode; when Tatsumi and Dulfer shook hands Dulfer had an ultimate heavy Bleach power moment, it was as though Tatsumi released his Reiatsu. The way that they used the painting effect that I like for it as well had me crying with laughter, it was the best handshake I have seen since the one at the beginning of Predator.

  • Yup, he’s Dutch. It actually was pretty accurate though. A bit slow perhaps, but the guy spoke in perfect ABN.

  • Lots of interesting faces (and handshakes) in this show (oh Deen… XD). And LOL, we all know what a hopeless romantic you are. It makes me wonder why you didn’t take up Maid-sama and chose the three most awkward shows of the season instead, haha.

    • Flags says:

I believe I would have to cover Arakawa Under the Bridge as well as a couple more to truly cover all the “awkward” romances this season. Shows about a two sisters and a girl who wants to sleep with 100 men come to mind. And then there’s a weird transforming Yaoi couple and multiple harem shows. I hate to say it Mint, but we are only picking at the iceberg of awkwardness this season…

      • It’s only awkward when you make it sound awkward.
Otherwise, I’d be in a pit of awkward soup and disaster crumbs

  • I like how Murakoshi always looks like he’s about to kill somebody.
