Kaichou wa Maid-sama! 7

I’m willing to bet that this has been screencapped many times before.

「 7 – The Debut of Miyabigaoka Academy’s Student Council President

I’ve always wondered what the most appealing factor of a meganekko was; what is it about some glass frames that people find so attractive? Is it the intelligent aura that surrounds the spectacles? The feel that this is someone you would be truly comfortable bringing home to your parents? That moe factor that can never fully be explained? They have their uses in real life (for… proper eyesight I would imagine) but in a meido café, they are employed to bring in those customers. As a high school student in the west, it can be a little puzzling. The first thing that comes to mind would be that glasses instill the notion that you are a studious nerd, and should get contacts as soon as possible (à la Ouran Host Club).

I, for one, have a love for megane characters, but it’s difficult to pinpoint why. This is a preference that doesn’t fully translate from 2D into 3D (i.e., Real Life), for some reason; perhaps it’s the negative connotation that glasses seem to have over here that clashes with the overwhelming feeling of “adorable~!” that Misa herself gives off when she wears glasses.

/random musings on inconsequential details

Cute~!

Other than some more spotlighting of the daily life at the meido cafe, (as the title might suggest) this episode introduces another school to the show, an elite, rich academy full of wealthy students. New developments are always welcome, and I’ll be looking forward to what these new faces will add to the show (other than more stalkers). Hopefully this doesn’t mean we won’t get to see more of the goings-on at the cafe, though, as those scenes are always fun; they also add something a little new to the standard shoujo fare.

Reverse Traps

This is one maid cafe I'd like to visi-shot-

But wait! There was still some more nice fanservice this episode, with the maids of the café donning mens wear and entertaining the ladies on a females-only theme day. It was nice to see Misaki getting a real thrill out of serving some ladies for once; sure, boys are always raining on her parade, but I’m sure some character development will kick in and she won’t mind them as much. She seems to honestly care about the students she lords over, despite being often exasperated by them.

USUI

Usui is so manly that flowers and butterflies can't resist his charm.

That’s in capitals because I still don’t get this guy. There have been shouts across the ‘sphere and the forums about his perfect qualities either getting a little old, or just further enhancing his bishie status. I think Usui is funny and likable enough without having to make him the epitome of male perfection. His blank stares and laid back attitude that irritates Misa to no end already make him a fun character who can entertain and perplex us viewers. I don’t think we’ll be getting any more information on his background soon, and it’s a wonder if they’d be able to cover any of it at all if Maid-sama! is only 13 episodes long (is it?). Nevertheless, his ability to render Misaki speechless with his deadpan manner hasn’t gotten old (yet!).

The “Rivals”

At least their uniforms look better! (I think. Well, ANYTHING is better than that horrific green/brown combo...)

As a series that seems to lack a little direction (although it’s understandable, being a run-of-the-mill-school-based shoujo) Maid-sama! seems to have picked up an antagonist of sorts. To be honest, all I can say is a big “meh” to this development; sure, we may have a bit of a storyline going on between Misa and these standard evil-and-rich-academy students, but it doesn’t exactly have me pumped for the next episode. From my foggy memory of the manga, I didn’t really find anything about this plot line enjoyable, although the addition of another fierce class president brings something different to the mix.

The Kiss

How to permanently traumatize an innocent soul...

Although there was A Kiss last episode, this week things take a different turn. This actually made me laugh quite a bit, what with the poor lad being reduced to a pile of ashes… it was a nice bright spot to the episode, where nothing else really stood out as “funny” to me. Of course, this also sets back the progress we made with that other kiss, thus resolving some tension and letting us focus on wherever the plot will take us next.

Overall Thoughts: Misaki and Usui’s antics are pretty consistent to me. I didn’t find any episodes particularly more enjoyable than the others, with all of the ones so far being quite average; it almost feels like I could watch them in any order and it wouldn’t matter that much. I like an overarching plot line, but it’s not something to expect in shoujo; the comedy is also pretty solid so far. The humor isn’t astounding, but it still makes Maid-sama a fun watch that usually never fails to entertain. This anime adaptation probably won’t leave its mark in the shoujo genre, but it’s a pleasant series over all. I was a little disappointed to see that we can pretend that kiss on the rooftop never happened, although it was exciting at the time, ha ha. And the cast is an entertaining one, even if I don’t feel emotionally attached to them or anything; the manager is a gem, the baka trio is amusing, the leads have good chemistry, and I wonder what Aoi is up to. It seems as though Tora will be featured prominently in the next episode, so we shall see how he adds some conflict to the show. I’d also like to see some more fun theme days at the cafe and I will confess that I wear glasses in math class to look smart

  • For me, glasses are just aesthetically pleasing. No real reason for it; I just like the way they look on people's faces.

I hope Usui and Misa's relationship can continue advancing at a decent clip. I was pleasantly surprised that he actually kissed her so damn early. Pretty big change from Kimi ni Todoke, that's for sure!

    • Yep, that's probably it! Although I like how they make people look educated, ohoho~

That was pretty much what I was thinking when that kiss actually happened. KnT drove me up the wall with all those almost-but-not-quite scenes! @_@

      • KnT also had those endless interior monologues. It was like every few sentences time would freeze and Sawako would be in her head wondering if she offended somebody, or if she should call somebody by their first name.

KwM-sama already seems faster moving to me because most things just happen out in the open…

Regarding glasses, its a good look. I approve, real life and otherwise.

      • Relationship-wise, KnT did move along at a much slower pace than Maid-sama, although it could be a good or a bad thing! I like it, at the moment. A lot of things are really happening out in the open, as you say, which surprises at times and at least makes some scenes have a little shock factor.

Megane <3 You and many more >.<-b

  • Lmao you wear glasses to math class?

Do you look sophisticated and mature? :P

    • You bet, Bass 8D I blend in perfectly, and no one can guess that I'm a little dense. Aren't I the most sophisticated and mature person you've ever met? Hahaha~

  • Vivi says:

ARE THOSE TWO BOYS KISSING?! :O M-maybe I should start watching this… because… it looks interesting….

    >___>

    <___<

Haha, you don't need to look smart, I bet you're pretty smart already haha

    • Yes indeed (although it was censored)! Ahaha they really know how to draw in those new viewers… ;D

And lol it helps when its a class full of smart people xD I'm not really "orz

  • I thought that Usui kissing that guy did a lot to restore Misa's confidence but ruined his image. So hands down respect for him. On the side note, I wear glasses too but not when I'm playing for my team XD

=/ reverse traps got me really wondering whether or not the directors took the time to actually make them look like girl-guys or just like plain guys (to me, some of them looked WAY too different to be the same character – aka the manager)
.-= SPIRAL´s last blog ..Angel Beats! episode seven =-.

    • Usui really did affect his image, there, but he's so confident I'm impressed. m(-_-)m What team? (I'm guessing some sort of sports team, haha). I can mostly play racquet sports without my glasses on although my accuracy isn't all that great XD

I don't think they really payed attention to detail there and made them more guy-ish, although I did like a lot of those designs (I didn't recognize the manager at all!). I was also pretty surprised that the female customer designs were pretty decent and not all that bland. So I guess it goes either way o/

  • Mentar says:

It's almost certain that KWMS will run for 2 seasons (on this channel, and in this spot). This also fits fairly well with the overall length of the manga source.

    • Wow, really?! Thanks for the heads up, Mentar! Yeah, the manga really has more than enough material (it seems) and it's extremely popular, so two seasons sounds great.

  • This was not a very 'happening' episode yet Usui makes me laugh whatever the situation maybe. I'm looking forward to how Tora would play out in the next episode thought it's quite clear he's a douche.

I'm amazed to find that two seasons are finalized? Definitely the material is there but has that been announced? I'm still awaiting the S02 announcement for KnT!
    .-= Kyokai´s last blog ..Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood – 57 =-.

    • I guess there haven't been many plot-defining moments in KwMS so far, although the introduction of another school is interesting enough. And yeah! Usui's actions/reactions are always quite amusing.

I really haven't found any more info on another season, so I guess it's a maybe (although I have a feeling there won't be). I'd actually prefer another season of KnT, at least. Hopefully we'll be hearing some announcements soon ^^

  • It's really true that KWMS has delivered mostly 'average' episodes so far – I think it is mostly because the entire series of thirteen something episodes is too short to fit it in, but surely something interesting will pop up at some point..

Yukimura and Usui's kiss – BEST THING EVER. Kinda caught me off guard, that is if I were to be someone who didn't read the manga before. Usui just used Yukimura like a chewtoy – I wonder what simile I should use to describe Misaki's worth to Usui this far in the anime…we don't know?!

I wear glasses too… when I'm at school and competitions and stuff. But after only a year (not even) of wearing them, things to seem blurrier than before I wore them. Aiyaiyai…all that because I spent all last summer staring at my HP laptop…and sleeping late and stuff.

Still, glasses are awesome :) You know why? Because Usui wears them too :) (spoiler?)
    .-= Starburst-chan´s last blog ..IT’S FRIDAY!*lets out deep breathe*&*collapses on bed* =-.

    • It's a very normal shoujo, but I like it. The manga looks quite long, and I'm wondering how they're going to adapt the rest into such a short run. I definitely agree that kiss was hilarious; I guess Misa is Usui's plaything? XD He really likes getting on her nerves.

You spoiled me, and now I'm going to go on a manga marathon! Glasses seem to make my vision worse, too… perhaps it's all a conspiracy set up by optometrists everywhere? I think it has to do with how your eyes don't flex as much when you wear glasses, but I have no idea for sure. Thanks so much for commenting! <3

  • Nice episode,

lol at the part when usui kissed the guy XD

anyway i knew it that other orez was an idiot =/

anyway cant wait for episode 8 D:

    • Ha ha, that was the best part of the episode! I lol'd out loud. (…And I just realized that that was kind of redundant).

      I'm looking forward to episode 8 as well! Along with what else the show has in store for us (;
