Giant Killing 8
To be completely honest with you, I watched this episode days ago. But I’ve been so bummed out by this week of anime that I just wanted to continue waiting for my ray of sunshine. As of my writing this, Arakawa Under the Bridge 8 still isn’t subbed. I was looking forward to this week’s episode so much and it is still eluding me. Not that this episode of Giant Killing was bad or anything, or even The Tatami Galaxy and House of Five Leaves. It’s just that this week all three shows felt like they were missing something. For House of Five Leaves it was character development, for The Tatami Galaxy it was Sakamoto Maaya, and for Giant Killing it was Tatsumi.
Summary:
Kuroda is being stupid again, luckily he trusts Sugie who is of the opinion that they are in the wrong. At least he asked some of the other players what their opinions were before crying. Tsubaki is causing trouble, Gino needs a dog who’ll listen to his orders and he lets “Baki” know that. Sugie and Kuro sit in the audience to watch ETU’s next game. Sugie says that after the first goal went in back in their first match they got scared and stayed to close to the goal which left too much space between the defense and the midfield; which contributed to their losses.
Sugie points out that their replacements aren’t doing that and that Dori is even coming out further because he has the space to do so. They aren’t as good at defending but they’re doing a better job. Unfortunately ETU gives up a penalty which Dori saves, but the defense after the deflection is lacking and they still concede a point. Kuro and Sugie figure that they have to evolve their way of playing otherwise their positions are going to be taken.
They return to practice and even play Tatsumi’s game in order to get on the pitch for the next game. Both of them are doing a much better job at defending and the game is scoreless because of it. Unfortunately a rookie mistake by one of the younger defenders on a cross lets a goal pass Dori. Kuro tells the kid that they’ve no time to mope; they need to push forward and take one back now. Tatsumi is pleased with his team’s progression and the fired up defense may just help them win their first game.
Thoughts:
Dori was a BAMF this episode. Not only does he not blame people for mistakes, but he actually gives them good advice. The advice he gave to Sugie was exactly what he needed to hear and I’m sure Dori knew that telling Sugie was the best way to get Kuro to come around as well. Speaking of Kuro the guy did a total 180 this episode. He went from being a douche not doing anything, to a douche helping out his team. And as anyone who has read my posts on The Tatami Galaxy will tell you, I have absolutely no problem with douches, just douches that are lazy.
Like I hinted earlier Tatsumi was hardly in this episode at all. He appeared only a couple of times and we didn’t get any of his titular Giant Killing. I imagine that we will get a lot of that next episode though because ETU needs a win pretty badly. Also considering that we are eight episodes in and ETU is yet to win a game, I’m worried about how much DEEN will get into this show. It has recently been confirmed for 26 episodes so we should be hopefully getting a lot more Tatsumi. I am interested as to what the climax will be though since they have introduced so many characters and teams at this point that they could end it almost anywhere. They could do the Bakuman trick of skipping months at a time.
I find it really funny that Crunchyroll has now decided that to start airing Giant Killing “in time for the World Cup”. I don’t know quite what happened, if they forgot the world cup was happening or if they had trouble licensing it, but just in time is right. It’s not as though the World Cup can sneak up on you, it takes place as often as a leap year after all. Speaking of the World Cup does anyone have any predictions for the World Cup? If you do let me know! Bass, Mint and I are always down to talk to anyone about football!

tatsumi appeared when he needed to. He holds the key to this whole series. Once he said something then everything else will fall into places

I actually think the lack of Tatsumi was key to this episode. Kuro needs to learn a lesson about failure, and despite it’s simplicity, it’s still not an easy lesson to teach. Tatsumi would have an especially difficult time doing it since Kuro hates him so much. Enter Ramen Guy, who fills the void with very plain wisdom he has gained from a lifetime of running his store. I think this episode went about as perfectly as it could go. Ramen Guy just needs to become a recurring character.

His methods are leading the players to realize their own faults but I want to see his managing techniques during a match. They don’t show a whole lot of the matches but I’d like to see him make come tactical decisions, like changing formation or even substitutes.
The way they concede, the goal differential is not looking good.
