Seikimatsu Occult Academy 1
Genre: Comedy, Supernatural
Themes: Daddy Issues, Rotating Penis
Number of Episodes: Unknown
My 19-year-old attention span isn’t capable of much, so first & second episodes are always a crucial make-or-break deal. But this is a great first episode, and didn’t bother to waste any time to explain and talk things over like hippies (aside from a short b’aawing session, which wasn’t horrible). It did not disappoint in action, especially with a badass girl who doesn’t even hesitate to beat the shit out of her own father, if you consider evil spirits as shit. The nicely done animation was well accompanied by a fitting score, which carried along each scene well and wasn’t obnoxious or overbearing. I am grateful they didn’t fight their enemy with crazy supernatural-esqueattacks, but rather went for a simple, good ol’ fashion axing, or else the anime would be another Soul Eater or Kuroshitsuji… not that it’d be such a bad thing, seeing as I really enjoy the former, and the latter is popular enough, but I’d prefer not to get into anymore typical supernatural-shonen series, because I have a lot of those on my plate already that I haven’t finished… “orz
Each character played their part well, albeit a bit too obviously, but I won’t write them off as cliché just yet. They are interesting enough, but the two main characters (the girl, Maya, and boy, Uchida, featured in the top image) are by far the most interesting, as they should be. While we barely (pun unintended) know anything about the boy, it’s clear he’ll be the less serious foil to our seriously ass-kicking – and probably tsundere - female lead. As for the other characters, it’s too early to assume what’s up with them, with the exception of the vice-principal, who seems obvious enough… unless the creators want to be sneaky by adding in twists and such, although I doubt it considering the number of episodes and the lack of seriousness. All character designs are fairly simple but good, with no one being too overly flashy or unbelievable as they stick to their anime archetypes – helpful childhood friend, clumsy meganekko (props for her eyes when her glasses are off haha, classic), bitchy and spoiled take-charge girl, cheerful fat guy. And although many viewers probably don’t care/notice when it comes to anime (especially when a good chunk of ignorant Death Note fans considered Misa as a gothic lolita… “orz), Maya has a cute, post-modern sense of fashion for a girl living in 1999 (90s = fashion diaster, both in America & Japan). Of course, this is only judging from one outfit, but it’s a cute one, so I’ll stand by it. The boy’s fashion is “lacking”, so to speak, but I like him anyway!
This episode has given me a few good chuckles, as they have small visual gags here and there, but I hope future episodes will make me LOL instead of LQTM (Laugh quietly to myself, because how often do you really laugh out loud?). Seikimatsu Occult Academy, is, as I recall, both comedy & supernatural, so hopefully they’ll manage to add in more comedy, as I already expect to see more mythical creatures and clever ways to deal with them. I have a handy mythological creatures encyclopedia which I love, so it might be my own biases as a fan of the supernatural saying this, but overall, this was a great first episode, with very little/nothing to complain about. Amusing and interesting characters, smooth animation, great pacing, and a unique plot, Seikimatsu Occult Academy will probably be one of the hits of the summer season.

I like how the theme points out there are daddy issues and rotating penis.
Comments hmmmmmm~
Great first episode! I really dig the aspect in that despite being a serious looking show, it’s one of the most hilarious (as far as an introduction) of this season!
Good reviews and Keep em’ coming!

Thank you very much, I’m very grateful! I’ll be sure to work hard!
Actually FYI this is the only episode that has to do with daddy issues, the next 10 episodes have to do with the rotating penii and the final episodes have to do with actual plot.
Mushyrulez´s last blog ..The Legend of the Legendary Heroes 1
Forgive me, I should have said it was a minor theme when hijacking poor Vivi’s post……;P
I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who saw the penis shadow. I must have blinked right before it started because all of a sudden it showed up and I had no idea if it was my imagination or if that was real.
Evil Dead is one of my favorite movies (and musicals) and I hope that they continue with the Raimi/Campbell references; maybe one of the characters hands will get possessed and he’ll have to cut it off and replace it with a chainsaw.
I also liked the Terminator reference, but as soon as the Vice Principle pulled out the tape I knew I was going to keep laughing for the rest of the scene.
chudleycannonfodder´s last blog ..chudleycannons- -hb211 was that in reference to Childrens Hospital or football
I love Evil Dead! Freaking hilarious man… Although, I actually didn’t catch the Terminator reference, though the second episode seems to have a lot of similarities haha
This has been one of the best out of Summer season, surely. Supernatural with a hint of comedy? Already looking forward to the next epi! ^_^
I’ve only watched HSotD & this so far, so I guess I can’t judge… I totally missed Shiki, you’ve convinced me to watch it *O*
