Harvey Two-Face. Clowns. These are the two things that I took from this chapter. Kubo threw us a curve ball with the return of Don Kanonji, and damn did that take me by surprise. I’m not sure if anyone even saw him coming, since I definitely forgot all about the tv star since he hasn’t appeared on these pages since the early days. When I first saw him, I thought he might be another one of these hidden cards that Soul Society has, especially given the previous surprise of Isshin being a former shinigami himself. In the end though, he wasn’t really much since he served to be a distraction, to buy himself and Tatsuki some time before Rangiku’s return. Then again, the sheer courage he showed against someone clearly above his level is commendable, given how weak he really is. Ignorance truly is bliss but the fact that he was able to stand up and throw in an attack under the overwhelming pressure of Aizen’s reiatsu gives him credibility. He is definitely the Hercule/Mr. Satan of the Bleach world.

Rangiku’s appearance was certainly a long time coming, since I remember making the prediction of her return weeks ago. I thought that Kubo actually forgot about her but all this time, she was just slowly making her way behind Aizens coat tails. I wonder though how she managed to get through the precipice world. Was she there when Aizen destroyed the Koutotsu? Or did Isshin let her pass through when Ichigo’s busy with his training? I’m sure this will be explained later on, even though it may just be a side-concern at this point. Her appearance does provide some time for Kanonji and Tatsuki to retreat for the time being. Her appearance doesn’t really hold much threat to Aizen but it will have ramifications on Gin’s mental state.

In his fight with Ichigo, he was clearly shaken or at least concerned when he noticed Rangiku making her way over. Since the two have some history in the past, Gin will not want to face a former friend. Awkward moments will definitely come soon enough and even though it will give us some answers as to why Gin defected, I’m sure Aizen wouldn’t have much patience. Perhaps Rangiku’s death at Aizen’s hands will be enough for Gin to revert back to the good side? God knows there’s no one left to help Tatsuki and Kanonji out at the moment, at least not in the real world. With Isshin and Ichigo preoccupied elsewhere and Rangiku half-dead, a change of heart from Gin might just be the only glimmer of hope left for the human world.

Some much needed fanservice for the guys, especially after all the bishies lately

Back in Ichigo’s head, the appearance of his hollow form takes Ichigo by surprise, especially since he doesn’t even recognize the mask on it’s face. It’s the same one he used during his battle with Ulquiorra. Since Ichigo is scared of his own powers especially in this hollowfied state, he can’t fully utilize this hidden power of his, leaving him with some very half-assed hollowfication. With Zangetsu and Hichigo combining into one, Ichigo will have his hands full trying to defeat them in order to obtain his true power. Since Isshin implied that this will lead to a more complete form of Getsuga, once he defeats this gimpified bishie Zangetsu he will be able to attain it. But since Ichigo has the added benefit of having a hollow form, he will be able to gain extra powers similar to the one he used to defeat Ulquiorra. I hope that once he does defeat the duo he will be able to freely use this power-up, since god knows he will need it to stand a chance against Aizen.

He will also need to conquer his inner doubt so this is pretty much a mental battle, similar to Naruto facing his evil self in front of the waterfalls. Just as Naruto finishes his, Ichigo starts on his own journey so whatever morals Kubo will try to preach will have to be brand new. Something similar to Naruto where Ichigo will need to forgive and accept the darker side of him as a part of himself will be nothing more than a cop out, so I hope he has a fresh take on this cliché. Once he does conquer himself, he can finally get his ass ready for the final showdown. I sure hope that his new form will be different than the one seen against Ulquiorra. Knowing Kubo, it will probably be minimalistic. Maybe an Ichigo with longer hair and inverted eyes; with half a hollow mask on? That will mean that he will be kitted out in a similar getup to Zangetsu/Hichigo now. I hope it’ll be more than that though.
