High School of the Dead 2

ALL HAIL LELOU-I MEAN ALL HAIL THE BOOBS!

Tetsuro Araki recently admitted that he wishes to fill his anime with jiggling breasts; and boy were they jiggling. Something I didn’t like about the manga and translates to something I don’t like in the anime is how ridiculous Shizuka-sensei is in her first scene. A student dies right in front of her and she is about to die and apparently she couldn’t care less. That bothered me in the manga so I can’t fault the animes choice to follow it closely, but I would’ve liked to have seen a little more concern. Her boob physics was one thing, her accompanying score of sound to go with her boob physics was something else entirely. I’m fine with boobs I don’t mind them, boobs exist, you usually see them every day; but boobs don’t make non-diegetic sounds. I will admit that even with my unflinching love for this manga and anime, I do not want to hear Shizuka-sensei’s boobs every time she’s on screen. Occasionally is fine but for fucks sake, read the mood, k?

I plan to have at least one Takashi serious face per post.

Now that we’ve got the negative out of the way let’s move on to the positive. Takashi had far less dialogue in this episode than he did in the first; however most of it was quite meaningful. Something that really got to me was his inner thoughts about the chances of his mother being dead, since she too works in a school. I am curious as to the fate of his parents and would not be surprised if they are already dead. As the protagonist and obvious choice for leader of this group of misfits, Takashi (and us as viewers) would be thrown a serious curveball if he discovered the death of his parents. How that would affect Takashi psychologically is up in the air, but I’m sure it would cause a boat-load of problems for the gang. Hopefully not “Nice Boat” related problems.

A-a...Saeko....sama.............k-k-kawai...

Saeko finally got screen time this episode and it’s great to hear Sawashiro Miyuki again, what has it been a week already?! They’ve already hinted at Saeko being somewhat of a sadist, that smile was only slightly more appropriate than the entirety of Shizuka-sensei. Speaking of senseis, what do we think would happen if Onizuka were put into this situation? Get on a motorcycle and finally claim his harem? You read my mind. I really enjoyed Saeko just avoiding zombies rather than killing them, simply pushing them to the side or poking them out of reach with perfect skill. Kouta was very fun to watch this episode, he didn’t quite put on the bat-shit crazy Hiyama voice that we’ve all come to love, but there were definitely hints of it. I like that he finds Saya to be moe, and thus his scary face turns off while talking to her; even if it does have a shut down time.

"Onegaishimasu."

Rei blushing at Takashi always annoys me, but blushing at him while standing ten feet away from the boyfriend that he bludgeoned quite recently was just silly. Whether or not she accepts that Hisashi had to be killed is one thing, getting hot for your childhood friend who you have been treating like a slug for about a year is something else entirely. Rei is obviously a very fickle girl; she stands in line with that robot from Twilight as being a woman that requires a man in order to know what living means. I am a big fan of Takashi X Saeko and I hope that this anime (in whatever episode count it reaches) follows that route. Saeko is awesome, Rei is not. Another ending I could accept is Takashi simply getting a harem, since that way he doesn’t have to choose. But again, let’s try to avoid the “Nice Boat”, ne.

Harems + Yanderes = Bad End #2

Saya is a wicked tsundere. She isn’t tsundere in that she has someone to be lovey dovey with (though Takashi as a childhood friend would be likely) but she is certainly hard on the outside and gooey on the inside. Like a burnt marshmallow. The moe fang certainly makes her an excellent addition to the harem. Also, she fucking owns that zombie…seriously. It looks as though High School of the Dead will abandon the High School next episode. I’m really interested in how the anime portrays Shidou-sensei, he is the only human that I would really consider to be an “antagonist” but I can’t really see his character being voiced by King Kittan so I’ll just have to wait for next episode to see Rei screaming at Takashi for a reason I still don’t know. I really enjoyed the ED playing during the show and building to the actual ED. I am really fond of that in an anime, and for good reason, a lot of my favourite anime do that. Natsume Yuujinchou, Black Lagoon and Bakemonogatari are certainly heavy hitters in there.

For all the dark comedy, there is still real drama.

Episode four is the episode that (I’m pretty sure) I’m really looking forward to. The show eventually hits its stride and balances comedy and drama quite well. Oh and here’s a question; why has the ED changed already? I was hoping for a twenty six episode series, that’s not going to happen if they’re switching songs like this. I afraid that if the next episode has yet another new ED than it will be almost one hundred percent positive that this is a one season show. That would really bum me out as there is more than enough for them to go two seasons and give the show a great anime ending. However it is also very likely that since the show would be one season, that after the manga finishes they could just do another season. Maybe they could do it like K-ON! and have one regular season and then have one double season to make the show an awkward length. Oh well, I’m looking forward to Alice’s introduction but mostly I’m looking forward to the ultimate apron.

  • I’m really glad Khota and Saeko got more to do this episode because they’re easily my two favorite characters. Their methods for dealing with zombies are the most interesting (Saeko just pushing zombies away and not killing them is very unusual for zombie stories and I’d love to see more of her beliefs and Khota’s gun skills also have to have an interesting story behind them). Plus, they don’t whine a lot, which is always a good thing.

I’m with you on the sound effects for the nurse. I think the problem is that the show thinks the nurse is funnier than she actually is. Her wandering around confused could have been funny, but when she ends up letting a student get killed, I’m not going to be sympathetic to her. Granted, this could be a show where they want all the characters to be assholes (Mad Men is great at that), but in order to pull that off they need 1) for the assholes to be interesting, which so far she isn’t, and 2) NOT HAVE JIGGLING BOOB SOUNDS.

Still, as long as the jiggling sounds are the worst the series offers, I think I can handle it.

hahaha in the this episode Saeko was awesome specificly her yandere moments and to me the nurse was pretty funny what i liked most is that she sounded similar to Code Geass’s C.C.

HA! “Nice Boat” reference lol. Anyway I can’t see it going that direction but if it does OMG! I too am looking forward to the ultimate apron as most people who have read the manga probably are. So far I must say that this is my favorite show of the season and Archer voicing Takashi is win he can’t die he’ll just UBW all the zombies and everything will be fine :D Anyway good job keep up it up looking forward to episode 3 and your take on it.

same here the apron scene is a very anticipated one oh by the way a new chapter to the manga was just added

I also want Saeko to end up with Takashi~~ ♥ I don’t completely hate Rei, because I try my best not to hate any character, although she is really annoying. I’m actually okay with the nurse, since she did bother to ask the kid for his name (although not as awesomely and gracefully as Saeko). Can’t wait for Alice! ;)

  • Some things I want to set myself here..

Kouta needs to live by the end of the series. Period. (I’m a non-manga follower BTW)

Saya is another reason why Eri Kitamura is climbing the ranks in my books.

Other than that Boobs and well pointed in this review.

As always great reviews! And Keep em coming!

  • Oh that boing sound…. =.=;; and I officially hate Rei! That BADUMCH scene was just pathetic! >.>
I would go for Saeko and Takashi any day. Saya was a bit too whiny in the end but I guess I should expect this kind of dorama from this kind of anime.

  • I agree with you on Shizuka-sensei’s airheaded-ness. Surely, being a school nurse, she would have cared enough not to be a bitch while one of the (noble) students was dying right in front of her.

“uh… what was your name again?”

    =_=

Kouto was awesome… and Saeko avoiding the zombies reminded me of Resident Evil. Always a good plan in those games. xD
