Seikimatsu Occult Academy 3
This Fumiaki/Bunmei-kun/#6/overly-romantic-nice-guy-centric episode is probably the funniest of the three, but definitely lacking in supernatural whoop-ass. Perhaps it’s because there’s just not enough Maya and too much #6, aka guy-with-Oedipus-complex, swooning over some girl who is just too annoyingly cute and reminds me of his mother… I can’t help but want to believe all of her cutesy-demeanor is fake, that she just might be something evil and monstrous, even though that would be too obvious and overplayed. After-all, with this girl in the picture, where does Maya fall? ): Of course, she’s too focused on her dead father to worry…
I wasn’t really impressed with many of the characters before, but obviously I spoke too soon, as they’re slowly growing on me now. Aside from Maya, JK and the meganekko (she shall be called Meganekko thanks to forgetfulness) are probably my favorites because they bring in a few extra laughs. There will probably be some sort of repetition with these characters - Maya goes out hunting for a supernatural being while Meganekko gets taken/possessed/falls victim to said being, Maya enlists the help of her childhood friend, Smiles, & JK, and #6 happens to be around while Maya & the being face off. Also, Maya abuses #6 on the side, especially in this fashion: “You really do like the occul–*SMACK*”. But, if there are more appearances of the”Yubaba and Zeniba” twins (Landlady & Restuarant Lady) and other weird characters like them, as well as a good progression with the plot, it should offset the repetition.
My favorite scene of this episode is probably the interaction between #6 and the vice-principal. At first I thought it was a little random for him to complement her hair and stare it like that – has he seen the back, did he know she has an awkwardly placed bun on the back of her head? – but her reaction was the best, it makes you forget that there’s a probability of her being the antagonist of the show. I almost felt sorry for her. But that cellphone is the best part of the scene. #6 should just use it with every girl he meets! “I hook up with her” –> dead. “I hook up with her” –> happily married and still alive with children. “I hook up with her” –> domestic abuse daily (with the wife abusing the husband, of course). That phone’s even better than the iPhone! Something I find interesting is that if he hooks up with her – and dies, and strangely enough their family sticks around his dead body long enough to become a skeleton, but I digress – the future isn’t too bright for her either, which makes me wonder about her place in the show. My initial assumption was that she was an alien in disguise, which sounds really stupid, but it would have been pretty funny… My guess is that she wants to prevent Maya and #6 from finding the Nostradamus key, but why? What do you guys think?
The scene when #6 tries to call his mother was probably meant to be sad, but I didn’t feel my heart breaking for him or anything. Honestly, what can he say to her? “I’m your son from the future, when you’ll probably be dead and aliens rule the world. Also, I can’t do the spoon thing anymore, sorry. Oh yeah, can I talk to myself and see what happens? Maybe the whole timeline will collapse on itself.” Also, he seems completely different from the overconfident person he presented himself to be to the resistance group with the leader who is most likely Maya’s father. Back then (Or in the future then? Forward then? The time-issue makes it confusing…) he was like, “I was the top of the class, I can do this, too easy,” and now (Or back then?) he’s more like, “Aaah, I don’t want to do this… no one likes me anymore because I can’t bend a spoon with my brain… I hate the 90s… I miss my mom…” I don’t like the 90s much either (except for some movies, cartoons, and baby-doll dresses), and it does suck that some girl keeps hitting him with various objects, but I wish he’d take his mission a little more seriously instead of frolic off with some girl.
With the way the episode ended, we will hopefully be able to see what #6 is truly capable of. The way he was contemplating over his spoon – “But once I couldn’t…” - indicates he could no longer do that sort of thing, or he messed up once and everybody forgot about him, so what makes this Abe Minoru so damn awesome? His profile says he has psychic abilities, unless my memory is unsurprisingly failing me, so if he doesn’t save Maya in the most badass way possible – unless she saves herself, which would be unsurprising as well -, I’d probably lose faith in this lover-boy.

Lol there were some good moments in this ep, like you pointed out (the granny sisters are freaky). I found Mikazes voice to be horribly annoying, which makes me wish she was a double agent and that all this is an act. Finding the perfect girl this easily? No freakin way. If she is a fake, maybe her true self won’t have such a grating voice. I do like her design though…
I also think that the confident, jocky Fumiaki portrayed in the future was just because he was narrating that part of the story to Maya. I guess he didn’t want to look like a schmuck so he made a bunch of stuff up. I mean, how can he be resting on an island resort during an alien invasion and do a 180 degree turn in personality and confidence? It was just him putting a spin on his take on the story I’m guessing.
Aah you’re right, I thought that’s how they treat all of their time agents! Haha. That makes much more sense considering he’s #6 instead of #1.
He should have used the phone on her, and see what happens…
This was another awesome episode. If I had the time to review, I would have started with an ad of “Confused about your love-life? Try our future cellphone to know exactly how things would turn out…” Imagine, the amount of heartache that phone would save. >.>
I felt almost sorry for Fumiaki for totally playing into the hands of Natsuki, whose intentions are clearly not kosher. As Bass said, I think Fumiaki used more than a pinch of a salt in describing the future. Imagine Terminator like future, where would you fit beaches, cigars and Hawaiian shirts? He sure upped many notches to exaggeration but I still find him very adorable in a weird way.
Btw, Need MOAR Maya-chan~!
I really liked the scene with the vice-principle as well. I’ve been thinking she is tough as nails, and a really bad person, then she gets all vulnerable (voice acting was AWESOME). Then everything twists around with the phone. Very funny.
I think #6 should have used the phone on ms. perfect as well. I’m pretty sure she is a monster.

I think Fumiaki’s comment about the vice principal’s hair was perfect: What better way to get yourself out of trouble than to compliment the person who’s giving you a hard time. Lucky for him, it worked. Perhaps a little too well, but he walked away at the right time. (And let that be a lesson to all men not to pick their women by the size of their boobs.)
Scamp has some pretty good theories regarding who (or what) this curry girl really is, and for the most part, I’m in agreeance – though part of me hopes for something a little more complicated, but since that didn’t happen for me in Ookami Kakushi, I doubt it’ll happen here either.
Never thought about Fumiaki diluting the truth about before he was sent to 1999 but it makes total sense. Though sometimes agents aren’t ranked in order of proficiency.
