Every once in a while, a manga comes out that changes your life and makes you look at things with a new perspective. This is one such manga.

Created by the mangaka behind Ciguatera, Furuyu Minoru, Boku to Issho tells the tale of two brothers, Suguo and Ikou, after they are turned out of their step-father’s house. The brothers pool their meager allowance and journey to Tokyo. There they meet Itou Shigeru (“Itokin”), a tattooed orphan from the wrong side of the tracks, and Shindo Kazuki, a young runaway from a well-to-do family. The four of them band together to survive on the mean streets of Tokyo.

The manga focuses on the hard-hitting realities of their life on the streets, as well as their eventual “adoption” into the home of a widowed barber and his teenaged daughter. Here are a few examples of the controversial and compelling topics discussed in the manga:
