Shiki 8
I feel like I fail at reviewing Shiki because the 720p versions are coming out later than usual and thus I’m left with keeping my eyes close to all Shiki discussion on twitter and even OC’s reviews at Metanorn (oh the agony! >.<). But then again, this is how I watch Shiki every week: at night, in complete darkness, headphones at 80% volume and 720p+ quality with its full glory. No wonder I mutter EEEEK and many other choice words while enjoying another installment. So, I can only hope that either umee hurries it up with releases or a fast subber adopt this show for 720p hayaku~. Someone relevant reading this? I can wish, right? Also, this review is going to be shorter than any other Shiki review I’ve done here because it’s hard to type with eight fingers… Before you say it keeping to the horror motif, nobody has cut them off; they just got scorched while cooking supper yesterday… T_T It throbbed like a mofo but it’s not a second-degree burn and my mom tells me that the soreness would subside in 2~4 days. I hope so!
「 Shiki 8 – Eighth Night (第夜話) 」Let’s start with the foreshadowing of a previous conversation that was not completely shown in episode six. The reason Seishin was all flustered in front of Toshio was because all puzzle pieces fit together now with the explanation of vampires and his many conversation with Sunako. The way Seishin writes about beings forsaken by God and their loneliness, it hints at his own search of the real truth about god; so he hides it well in the supernatural stories that he concocts. He thinks that God can’t be cruel to those who are different and scoffs at the discrimination that people throw at beings like Sunako, who are isolated by their inborn faults. Little does he know that the pain of loneliness that he feels for her is more than what it seems.
It was easy to predict that the grave digging team wouldn’t find Megumi’s body though it was an opportune time to finally come face to face with a real Risen, who fail-attacked Kaori (somewhat like fail whale) and got bonked on the head. This was one of the random people already recorded dead by Ishida but wait; even he’s missing so forget about records. Interesting to note were the Sakura petals (Byakuya’s shikai anyone?) that sparked as Natsuno hit the corpse demon and the strange vibrations. This is not the first time this has happened to Natsuno though; similar reaction occurred when he felt his senses heighten whenever Megumi stalked him. I still wonder if he has some special ability or that happened just because the guy’s head was hard as per the vampire myths.
Leaving an undead half-buried without staking him? Amateurs! But, I really can’t blame them for trying to leave a clue for the adults even when it was of no use. The undead in question simply rose again and went hippity hop to his lair (most probably the Kirishiki mansion). Also, you have to give it to the kids, even being scared shitless they not only dug the grave to prove their fears but are determined to tackle and put a stop to the scraggly bunch of Risen, preying freely on the common folk of Sotoba. Their next diabolical plan is to stop the dead from rising even if it means staking their hearts. However brave a front Natsuno puts up, driving a stake or even dealing with supernatural beings that are more powerful can give anyone the heebie-jeebies. He should have hurried home though because that Shizuka Matsuo is one creepy brat, who even bossed his parents around. If he doesn’t hurry back home, he wouldn’t even have time to go OH FFFFFF-. Also, it would be fun to see if the loli ventriloquist turns out to be a boy with a wig because in the foreshadowed picture, there’s only another kid beside Sunako (I’m just messing with your head, Shizuka’s a girl’s name).
Before I sign off; OMG! Finally a preview? Is Daume trying to kill me with more hints! Le sigh, it’s pretty clear that Nao has Risen as well (the patient who Toshio dismissed even when she couldn’t right her own shirt for herself) and maybe there’s some connection to Sotoba with Seishin’s stories after all. I would look forward to the culmination of the surprise visit of that creepy kid and what Natsuno would do. Fortnight back, I started reading the manga just to catch up on details of the chapters that have already been animated but the current episode more than ever is keeping me on my toes. I have to use all my fandom willpower to not read ahead to find out what happens to Natsuno. He would get bitten sooner than later but would a random brat suffice or Megumi gets her revenge? We’ll see next, so ja ne~

When you told me how you watch Shiki, I quickly copied because it sounded AWESOME. I need more horror in my life. 8D By the way, I hope your fingers heal soon T.T
I agree about Seishun…He believed Toshio as soon as the words left his mouth, and yet he still keeps Sunako company…Seishun seems to be the type who thinks way too much, so I wonder if this fault will get him into trouble~
I thought the cherry blossoms and vibrations were just part of whenever Natsuno either comes close to an okiagari or to show how shocked he was at killing him o.o It COULD be like a sixth sense, but it's kind of useless if he can only sense it when he sees it XD
Let us die in anticipation for the next episode together~
Thanks for the wishes, the fingers have recovered nicely! xD
You can't really blame Seishin for who he is. Being a Monk the over-analyzing comes with the territory but I can only hope he sees for what things are rather than sympathizing with vampires.
I agree with you on the special power front. Nothing is still apparent being of any use of whatever he has up his sleeve. Now, another episode over, let us die some more in the wait for next episode! ^^
That geisha doll is so freaky looking! I'm going to stay away from the front page of Sekijitsu for a while… ;__;
If I ever do get around to watching the next episode, it would have to be during the day, with all the lights on, and the volume on mute. The screencaps alone are enough to give me nightmares lol. I hope your burns heal soon!
I know right?! The moment it changed stance from a normal geisha doll to the scary version was eek!
My fingers have recovered well and I hope you feel better soon! Those stitches sound real scary! I will remain worried for you, get well soon! ♥
I kind of hope that Natsuno doesn't get bitten. We need a hero to fight against the vampires, and so far everyone is pretty much at their mercy.
And yeah, I agree Shizuka Matsuo is frigging creepy. Why is it that the kids are always the scariest? XD
I can't wait for next week. It really ended on an intense cliffhanger!
That is my wish too but him turning into a skull in the OP actually proves that he would… ;__;
The cliffhanger intensified in the current episode, but at least we now know who's returning and Shizuka might turn out to have a better side, hopefully!
Btw, love your avatar; the return of Ichigo in the current chapters has been epic! xD
I also wait for the 720p episodes to come out, although I wonder if there are higher quality ones somewhere… So much P! XD
Hope your fingers get well soon ;~; ♥
Hahahaa! There's always that 1080p version but none of it has been subbed yet. Maybe coalgirls would pick this up, hmm!
Thanks for the wishes~ ♥ I'm happy to report that the said fingers have recovered well! XD
The lesson in this episode is never listen to your wife. I had mad respect for Natsuno's Dad until he actually gave into his wifes request and let her in. My policy is to never invite someone into my house after dark, especially if they are a violent creepy school girl with a puppet.
Lol! Even for trick or treat, who in their right mind would let such an abomination enter their humble abode? Amateurs! As I learned from Supernatural, throw holy water or salt before talking, dumbass! XD
Btw, I think your lesson would be intensified after watching the current episode of Shiki. Weird wives in this series for sure!
