This sure didn’t feel like a set up chapter. After the anticlimactic ending of Kakashi and Zabuza’s second bout, we were treated with a lull chapter of sorts, whose main purpose was to establish the key characters and encounters in the next impending battles. But to me it didn’t feel like that. I felt that this chapter was actually more exciting than the last battle, mostly because we got to see something new, rather than something old.

Even without having a punch thrown, the tension was really high due to the amount of obstacles the current hero’s border defense is facing. Previously I thought that it was only going to be Muu against Gaara but the addition of 3 other former kages changed the whole complexion of the battle. With two of the kages having personal connections with the leaders of the Ninja Alliance, it won’t be farfetched to think that there will be more than a few personal battles going on here.

For one thing, Gaara against his father would be something else, since Gaara as a kid never really had the affection he craved from his dad. When your dad tried to kill you as a child, and only treated you as a failed experiment, you can bet that Gaara would want to at least show his dad that he is more than just a jinchuuriki. Showing his development as a ninja without a bijuu, as well as succeeding his dad as the new kazekage would lead to some interesting pregame talk, so that alone will be worth the wait.

More fodder for the fodder machine

We don’t really know about the current Raikage’s situation with his own dad, but since he was talked out of joining the battle, we might not be seeing it anytime soon. The only scenario where I see them connecting in the next few chapters is when the alliance is too overwhelmed by the barrage of attacks. Either that, or Raikage just loses his cool like he always does (I’m also interested to see Killer Bee meeting with his dad. That would be a hoot).

Other connections will also be tested, with Neji’s father Hizashi, Ino-Shika-Cho’s teacher Azuma and Tsunade’s former lover Dan among the Zetsu army along the border. While those guys are cool and all, I think they will probably be among the background mostly, with only a few panels to show the meetings with their loved ones.

The Kabucronies (patent pending) that excite me the most from the Zetsu group however is the newly introduced Kinkaku and Ginkaku brothers. For those who can recall the old Danzou flashback, these two were the leaders of the Kinkaku force who dealt the final blow to Nidaime back in the day. Since they are so feared, I’m guessing they are kage level at least, seeing as they managed to kill off Nidaime and force Sarutobi, Danzo and their team to retreat. Now that they have been revealed, with the added twist that they actually have a tinge of Kyuubi chakra in them (whiskers were a dead giveaway, although he also has the Hachibi’s horns and the Shukaku’s eyes. Successful mist experiment?), shit’s going down. When you get the Raikage riled up like that, you know they are ballers. With the amount of newly introduced characters however, I think we will only get a few panels of badassery from these two, kinda like how the 7 former mist-nins were introduced. It’s sad but it’s just unavoidable at this point (Please prove me wrong Kishi).

Something new to be used for Naruto or Sasuke later on. You heard it here first.

Another large revelation is the introduction of yet another rare technique, something greater than a bloodline limit. Bloodline expansion, with only two users in existence, is an occurrence where the user is able to manipulate and combine three elemental natures rather than the usual two, meaning even more heads rolling for the opposition. Since the current tsuchikage and the second tsuchikage are the only two in existence to have the technique, they will be the second big name encounter behind Gaara and his dad’s battle. Since little is known about these techniques, other than the current Tsuchikage’s ability to create the dust element, I’m interested to see what other applications it can be used in. Still, I can’t help but feel that when all is set and done, all of this new stuff is fodder in the eyes of the sharingan. This was probably introduced so Kishi can pull something new out of his ass for Madara and Sasuke later on. Sasuke’s sideeffects from his new eternal mangekyou for instance (or maybe something unique and new for Naruto?)

There really was a lot of new info introduced in this chapter. Other than the obscene amount of new people, we now have Black Zetsu infiltrating enemy lines and successfully finding the feudal lords hideout spots. I can sense some kidnapping in the near future, and that will definitely be a trump card for Madara if he can make the Alliance hesitate a little with his newest hostages.

Kabuto’s decision to give the Kage’s their memories and personalities will definitely make the next few chapters interesting, since it will mean nothing if the alliance were fighting against mindless zombies. This way, there will at least be some mindgames at play, and we will get to see the kage’s at their full power in battle. I can’t wait to see the biggest players in history show off their stuff. Being in their primes, they better not disappoint like Zabuza did in the last battle.

  I'm a bit put off by the sudden introduction of all these supposedly super powerful characters. With each new addition, the other ones' worths feel cheapened by a bit.

  Kind of interested in seeing how the whole bloodline expansion will actually mean other than a label to denote someone as super uniquely strong,
