Now that I’ve done my top matches and top moments, that leaves only the characters to be revealed. While this list may be pretty common to other Eyeshield readers out there, I can guarantee that you will be surprised with my choice for the top. I tried to keep it short this time, but in the end it ended up being another monster. Sorry for the TL;DR. It’s just that I have so much to say about this manga that sometimes it’s hard for me to stop. So hopefully, you’ll be able to follow my thoughts on these players without killing yourself. Enjoy.

Position: Quarterback
Team: Seibuu Wild Gunmen
Jersey Number: 7
Defining Technique: The Quick-Draw Pass
40-Yard Dash: 5.6 Second
Bench Press: 70kg
Height: 177cm
Weight: 66kg
Year: 2nd
Kid is one of the most unstoppable quarterbacks in the game. He is just as witty as Hiruma, but he has the genius talent in addition to the brains. While he is not as flashy, he is able keep his calm even in tough scrutiny. Plus that quickdraw throw is insane. It may not look great, and to be honest the mechanics of it look really awkward, you can’t deny that it is a devastating asset.
Show ▼

With such a quick release, rushers rarely have enough time to register the sack. I’m pretty sure Gaou was the only one who is able to put a finger on him, but then that was due to an uncharacteristic lapse in concentration. Plus with his favourite target Tetsuma, the two create the strongest one-two punch in the game. He may have seemed like someone without ambition, but his turn in the Hakushu game meant that from that point on, he would always be aiming for the top. With his only weakness gone, not many will be able to stop him now (don’t tell Gaou that though).

Position: Quarterback/Safety
Team: Hakushu Dinosaurs
Jersey Number: 4
Defining Technique: The Screw Bite
40-Yard Dash: 5.2 seconds
Bench Press: 60kg
Height: 177cm
Weight: 66kg
Year: 1st
Another quarterback, although I think it’s better if we classify him as a safety/linebacker hybrid, he is yet another player with similar cunning to Hiruma. If Hiruma is the “trickster”, then Marco is the “spy”. Playing the safety position, he is able to overlook the entire field as the last line in defense and with his great ability in predicting and tracking the balls movements, he is a really formidable roadblock, as Sena found out in the Kantou final.
Show ▼

His screw bite technique is such a great tool in defense, since he is able to forcefully take possession of the ball with the chance to take it home for a pick 6 (returning a turnover for a touchdown). His belief in the mantra “Strength is Absolute” meant that he would always go for the powerplay, and he would do whatever it takes to increase his chances of victory. I like that quality, since he is very similar to Hiruma for using the best of what he is given. Plus the fact that he looks like a yakuza makes him that much cooler.

Position: Kicker
Team: Deimon Devilbats
Jersey Number: 11
Defining Technique: The 60-yard Magnum
40-Yard Dash: 5.6 Second
Bench Press: 100kg
Height: 175cm
Weight: 77kg
Year: 2nd
The old man of Deimon is also one of the coolest. He does not look like a typical high schooler, much like Kid, so he really looks out of place in the high school setting. Plus, his comical haircut, as a result of revenge from Hiruma, means that he looks even more out of place. Still, that just brings more to his charm for me, since he is such a calm head.
Show ▼

Plus his codename is pretty sweet. “60 yard Magnum” is a great nickname and it is justified due to his powerful kicking, even if it is a bit rough on the edges. For all the talk of him being a very unrefined kicker, I don’t think we’ve seen him miss a field goal in the manga, so for what it’s worth he is a very accurate kicker. It’s just that it may be a bit tense to see it slowly sail wide, only for the strength of the kick to ricochet it back between the uprights.

Position: Runningback/Safety
Team: Seibuu Wild Gunmen
Jersey Number: 29
Defining Technique: The Roping Rodeo Drive
40-Yard Dash: 4.5 Second
Bench Press: 60kg
Height: 159cm
Weight: -
Year: 1st
When he was first introduced, he looked a lot like a mini Hiruma. To hear that he was actually a close mentor of Sena as a kid was a shock, since I thought he was Hiruma’s kid brother or something. But thanks to a redesign, he looks nothing like his old self so I guess it’s all good. He definitely shares a lot of Sena’s qualities on the pitch, but mentally he is on a different level. Both share the same small physique as well as the crazy fast feet. With him joining Seibu, it gave them yet another offensive outlet that makes that team so formidable.
Show ▼

A very proud player, he is always looking to challenge the best players on the other team. He takes pride in being the one who first taught Sena his devastating run, but he also sees Sena as his ultimate rival when he found out about Sena’s position in Deimon. His pride is his most defining character though, since it’s one of the things that set him out from the rest of the pack. Without it, he would have just been a Sena clone.

Position: Runningback/Fullback
Team: Teikoku Alexanders
Jersey Number: 21/22
Defining Technique: The Caesar’s Charge
40-Yard Dash: 4.3 Second
Bench Press: -
Height: 190cm
Weight: -
Year: 1st
He actually comes off as a bit of a dick when he was first introduced. It was probably due to the fact that he is so confident in his own abilities, but I think I was annoyed most by the fact that he is constantly challenging whoever he meets. He also likes to fight on equal grounds with everyone but sometimes that can be perceived as cockiness. In time though I learnt to like his character since it’s revealed that he carries this persona only to solidify his aura of invincibility.
Show ▼

Add the fact that he is an incredible player; he really is the total package, fit for being the real Eyeshield 21. He has a 4.3 40 yard dash, is very tall, and has insane amounts of will power to compliment his strength. His Caesars Charge in particular is so strong that even Shin couldn’t bring him down with his Trident Tackle. I guess this is what appeals to me the most, seeing as he has the best of every quality, in addition to that warrior’s mentality. Some may find him annoying, as I did as first, but as a player there’s no denying his ability.

Position: Undefined
Team: Shinryuuji Naga
Jersey Number: 2
Defining Technique: The Godspeed Impulse
40-Yard Dash: -
Bench Press: -
Height: -
Weight: -
Year: 2nd
Even though Agon is the single biggest dick in the whole manga, he is actually quite high on a lot of people’s fav lists due to his evilness. There’s always that appeal to villains and this guy is no different. Seriously, he has no redeeming value whatsoever but it’s because of this that people love him. He is the person that everyone wishes they had the guts to be, but doesn’t want to admit to it.
Show ▼

From his constant insults to his twin Unsui, to his reggae dreads and those sick sunnies, he is just someone that aggravates the hell out of you. But there’s no denying his quality as a football player. He is probably the only player in the manga who can play every position. He has the strength of a lineman, the speed of a back, the throwing ability and smartness of a quarterback, the animalistic instincts of a linebacker and the ruthlessness of a psycho.

Due to these qualities, he doesn’t have a defined position in the manga, as he goes wherever he wants, whenever he wants. His godspeed impulse is the one thing that sets him apart on the pitch though, since it is a gift that can’t be replicated no matter how hard you try. With his only weakness of a lack of training disappearing after the Deimon game, he is one of the few players in the manga that is truly unrivaled.

Position: Linebacker/Fullback
Team: Oujou White Knights
Jersey Number: 40
Defining Technique: The Trident Tackle
40-Yard Dash: 4.2 Second
Bench Press: 140kg
Height: -
Weight: 71kg
Year: 2nd
The stoic, silent warrior. Not much is really known about him other than the fact that he is a gym rat who is constantly trying to push his abilities to the limit. He is American Football’s answer to Street Fighter’s Ryu, since he lives to only fight on the gridiron. While he can be seen as a rather one-dimensional character, it’s tough to argue that this one dimension to him makes he seem really cool.
Show ▼

Playing linebacker, he is the ultimate rival to Sena both in his position on the pitch as well as his abilities. Linebackers are the heart of the defense, and as middle linebacker, it is his responsibility to stop the run. This means that he and Sena will always be face to face on every down.

While he seems like someone who rarely talks and smiles, he does have a surprising comical side, although he is totally oblivious to the fact. His penchant of destroying any piece of technology is such a surprising quality that it really is funny. The fact that he doesn’t even know about this inability makes it that much funnier and it adds a nice little quirk to an otherwise boring package. Still, he is such a cool character that even without this side to him, he will still be high on any list.

Position: Runningback/Safety
Team: Deimon Devilbats
Jersey Number: 21
Defining Technique: The Devilbat Ghost
40-Yard Dash: 4.2 Second
Bench Press: 45kg
Height: 155cm
Weight: 48kg
Year: 1st
The top 3 list is always where I often stumble around a lot. Like my top 5 matches, I really can’t decide between the three. On some days, I’ll have one on the top. On the other, another player goes up. I don’t know. It’s very hard to pick when there’s so many quality characters in the manga.
Show ▼

Anyway, for now the main character goes in third after some very heavy thinking. Sena was the ultimate underdog. If not for one specific quality, he would be considered an afterthought in any other sport (other than athletics). But with his insane ability to run at a fast pace, as well as his ability to weave his small figure through traffic makes him the perfect candidate for runningback. Physique could be attained, but raw talent can’t. That’s why Hiruma placed all his faith into Sena, since he has all the tools, but doesn’t yet have the guidance.

His evolution in the manga is the main highlight for me. His ability to overcome any new opponent, and his ingenuity and natural instinct in his running makes him someone who will rapidly develop even in the middle of the game. His weakness of being timid and shy disappears once he is on the pitch, and even though it took him a while to be comfortable with himself, once he found his confidence, no one can ever stop him. And for that ability to face adversity even against all odds, Sena is one of those characters that truly fit to be the face of a franchise.

Position: Quarterback/Safety
Team: Deimon Devilbats
Jersey Number: 1
Defining Technique: The Devilbat Laser
40-Yard Dash: 5.0 Second
Bench Press: 75kg
Height: 176cm
Weight: 67kg
Year: 2nd
The control tower of Deimon, Hiruma is probably the most entertaining player in the whole series. From his shocking appearance, to his attitude and personality, he is definitely one of the most unique characters in all of manga. Who else can say that they bribed the school principal into building him a lavish clubhouse? Or an underground weapons silo right underneath it? Not many that’s for sure, and that’s what makes Hiruma such an awesome person.
Show ▼

His shocking appearance and his stack of readily available weapons are all key to his persona, since he aims to shock and scare you in order to read you as a person. He has one of the most analytical and ingenius minds in the game, and he uses this to his full advantage. Due to his lack of physical qualities, he takes the strongest cards available and uses them to their full potential. But I always found that statement a bit lacking.

For someone with no physical qualities, how the hell is he able to throw his huge bombs down field? And what of his incredible accuracy with the devilbat laser? For all this talk of his shortcomings, he is a damn good player in my mind. He may not have the speed, but he has the brain to predict plays 10 steps ahead of anyone. And I would rather have that than any other quality, since it means that he has the ability to sustain and outlast any other player who solely rely on their physical qualities.
Either way, Hiruma will always be remembered for his piercings, his elfish looks, his blonde spikes, his weapons, his ingenuity and his bravado. And I bet he would have it no other way.

Position: Kicker
Team: Bandou Spiders
Jersey Number: 99
Defining Technique: The Spiders Web
40-Yard Dash: 5.5 Second
Bench Press: 65kg
Height: 177cm
Weight: 65kg
Year: 2nd
I bet you didn’t see this one coming. You were probably thinking that I’d have someone cooler like Kakei, Akaba, Panther, Monta or Juumonji up top right? Well you’re wrong. The great thing about Eyeshield is that there are so many awesome characters, and that there will be someone to love each and every one of them. And I’m no different. Rather than go for the safe and popular pick, I went with someone that I really thought was genuinely funny and fun as a character. Yea, he’s quite a big dumbass, but that’s part of the appeal.

Show ▼
Koutarou is the ace kicker from Bandou Spiders. He has been likened to a Japanese Elvis, and is always carrying around a comb in his hand much like the King himself (which he replaces after every use). He always has something to say when it comes to Special Teams, and he is not afraid to make a fool of himself to have his thoughts go through. He is also a very loyal teammate, since he rejected Teikoku’s approach when they came to recruit Bandou’s star players.

What I like about him the most is his passion though, since he is so comical when he talks about the kicking game. The Bandou match ranked high on my list because of his presence. Seeing him burn that precious timeout to tell a flashback was so funny that I was gasping for breath. Timeouts are one of the most important aspects of the game, and for him to use it so casually was just ridiculous to me. His “smartness” knows no bounds.

He is the polar opposite of Musashi as a kicker, but his ability is not that far off. Where Musashi opts to go for power, Koutarou aims for finesse. His precision and ability to kick in any condition is his strongest characteristic, although it makes him a somewhat predictable player. Still, he boasts a near perfect kick rate and always manages to split the uprights so he is definitely a premier player. His passion ended up being his undoing in the Deimon match, but the fact that he is such a firm believer in the kicking game makes him quite a character.

I guess I’m just a sucker for dumbasses. I could have chosen Sena or Hiruma for my top spot. Even though I probably enjoyed them more throughout the series, I still like Koutarou for being a first rate idiot. So I think I’ll keep to this pick, since it’s not fun to be so similar to everyone else. Idiots are just a tight group like that.

So that about covers it for my top players. As with any list, there were a lot I regret leaving out, like Kurita, Monta, Juumonji, Akaba, Kakei, Mizumachi, Panther etc. It was definitely fun looking back at these characters and their quirks though. So the question is, who tops your lists?

I was a little disappointed to see no female characters in them. : P Mamori would've been my number 3. :3
Yea, I wanted to include some ladies but this manga was mostly focused on the players so I thought I had to show them the respect :P
I already knew Koutarou was coming from our little chats, teehee XD It's okay, since Rui is probably my favourite aside from Hiruma and he's pretty weird…It's good to see Agon on there because even if he's a jerk, he was CREATED with the intentions to be a jerk and accomplishes it amazingly well.
My top 5 would probably be Rui, Hiruma, Maruko, Kid and Gaou. I'm surprised I ended up liking Gaou as much as I did, maybe it's because I resonate with the whole "killing for the sake of protecting someone" thing. XD
There are surprisingly a lot of Rui fans out there.
I was originally a kittle skeeved out by him when he was first introduced him, but I began to like him after knowing of his similarities to Hiruma. Plus, even after being released as Hiruma's slave, he supports Deimon like that snow giant before the Xmas Bowl.
He's pretty awesome and it was great to see that he improved so much since he played college ball
Hiruma would have been my #1 guy (you can't defy his football jersey! It speaks the truth. XD), but I must admit, I very much enjoyed the unexpected result for first place. That guy is such a lovable goof, you can't help but really like him. And the moments you posted of him are fantastic! Haha. I loved them all. =D
Wonderful job on the top ten list! It was a fun read, and the pictures you used were great, too. I appreciate all the time, love and effort that was put into it – and the rest of the week, too. <3
Haha Hiruma was one of those safe picks, along with Sena. I just had to differentiate myself from the pack, and I really liked Koutarou from the moment he was introduced.
And thanks for your support, I'm really glad you like the week :)
