Steins;Gate 02

That's right, all plot here. All day long.

Steins;Gate might be the first show I’ve seen in a while that has two ‘set up’ episodes. Most animes usually don’t do this because most animes usually only get twelve episodes to strut their boob filled stuff. This however does not make me conclude that this show is a two season show though because while we don’t know how long the show is (yet) we do know that it is plot driven.

I realized this after finishing the episode but it’s really been a while since I’ve seen a completely plot driven anime. Usually anime comes in two types: You have your ‘normal’ anime which consists of a minor plot, minor development and a lot of theme episodes, an example being Kore wa Zombie Desu ka (Also, most animes. Period.). You then also have your character driven dramas, like Hanasaku Iroha, but even those shows will have the occasional beach episode.

STOP STEALING MAH THING!!

Something like Steins; Gate fits in what I call the ‘plot-driven’ category, a category that Bakemonogatari also fits in. Though I think Bakemonogatari was the only show I’ve ever seen where I really wanted a beach episode. Then again all this sorting doesn’t matter since anime only fits into two categories anyway, original and adapted. And 90% of anime is fucking adapted anyway so lets more onto episode two of Anime’s;Fate.

I was curious last week at how alike myself and Hououin Kyouma were. Then this week I think everything just fell into place. Not only is his outside life exactly like mine but so is his inside life. The moment I saw him sitting at his desk while drinking Dr. Pepper all I could think of was: “Where’s that giant DDD/Metanorn/Sekijitsu/Daifuuku chat convo at? Does he use skype and adium too?” Right afterwords I found myself searching for a book that I couldn’t seem to find but that is irrelevant.

It's hard out here for a pimp.

I appreciated the shows use of fast cuts for comedic purposes. If they’re done right fast cuts can be really effective. I liked the combined use of the fast cut with the flashbacks to represent just how much Okarin got owned. Makise Kurisu is turning out to be a really fun character to watch. I’ll be interested to see how her cold dere self will continue from here on out. I can’t wait to see her enter the maid cafe and then moe out at Mayushi Nyan Nyan’s awesome wig. If anyone has ever wondered what my relationship with Mint is like they should just watch defeated Okarin/flashback scene; it’s pretty much that except we’re both equally condescending.

"Daga Otoko da!"

This week we were also introduced to (I believe) the remaining characters of the show. We have the lovely Feiris-chan who is named very similarly to a side-quest in Dragon Age 2. Then we have Amane Suzuha, an eighteen year old who loves CRT televisions and corn-on-the-cob; she’s a yandere/traitor for sure. Then we have Kiryuu Moeka who is clearly lost after wandering from the set of Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei. And finally we have Urushibara Ruka; who is so cute that he just had to have a penis.

Other than Kyouma-dono the best character in this show is clearly “Mista Brown”. Dude looks like royalty that chose to have a normal life and do what he was passionate about instead of rule. I say royalty because he is clearly the brother of Lordgenome. My Japanese isn’t very good, but I think Tennouji means something like “Heavenly King”, go figure, right?

One in every four masturbates too much.

I would just like to point out that it is not cool to do that to a dudes gel-bana. Just saying. If Chaos;Head is any indication then John Titor will turn out to be our very own Okarin. Or if not one of the other main characters. Or maybe it’s really me! I’m looking forward to seeing how Makise Kurisu tries to cover up the fact that she (apparently) disproved time travel only to be like; “teleportation is a work in progress though.” And then she’ll do some sort of pose while saying; “Kyun!” Or maybe I’ve just finally turned into a mad scientist, HAHAHAHAHAHA…..

I couldn’t see any problems with the animation this episode, but again I’m not the best at noticing. If any of you spotted some bad juju going around in the episode be sure to let me know. As it turns out I did skip both the OP and the ED this time. But I’m not lazy, I did make sure to go through to the end. It seems that they’re going the ‘no-preview’ route, which seems pretty smart for a mystery show. Other wise you’d get assholes like me blogging about it, oh wait…..

Doujin in the making...

I would just like to take a second to talk about the cake that I was eating while watching this episode. I got a slice of this cake with a meal I got from Mino’s (which is a restaurant in Canada, maybe America?) and it was called “Chocolate Suicide Cake”. I don’t know about suicide but it was so sweet that I couldn’t even finish it. It is now sitting on my desk, taunting me to take another shot. I don’t think even L could eat that thing.

So that’s it for another week of Holy;State. I should say here that I had originally planned on covering “Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san” as well this season, but seeing how it’s a twelve minute show I’ve decided that I’ll just enjoy it for what it is instead, you guys should do the same, it’s pretty interesting. See you guys next week and don’t forget to……….believe it!

I think Madoka qualifies as plot-driven, but I agree it's a rare category.

Ruka is one heck of a trap. He had me fooled for sure. xD (Should I admit that aloud? Ehh…)

Like you, I think John Titor is Okarin. On the topic of Okarin, I was surprised to learn that he's not just eccentric but a genuinely nice guy. He'll be a fun harem lead if that's the direction this show takes.

That cake sounds pretty nasty. :p You should eat carrots instead. :D

    • For the record, the only thing I classify Puella Magi Madoka Magica as is: Incomplete.

  • Bloody trap got me. Should've known that no chick alive is that "flat".

    *ahem*

Anyways, I'm really lost at the moment. Makes me feel kinda dumb. Thought I'd read your post to figure out what the hell is happening but I ended up being even more confused.

    Hmmm….

Still, intrigue is awesome. Confusion is awesome. Fast-paced, broken up, random dialogue is awesome. Reminds me of how I felt watching Bakemonogatari.

    Totally awesome.

  • So that's what Flags would look like. It makes sense because Okarin has a bit of a beard too.

I didn't notice that John Titor could be Okarin until you mentioned it. Although that microwave was pretty trippy. I can kinda understand what's happening but it's hard to put it into words.

I feel like I've been trolled by Ruka… "OTL

I am craving for a Dr Pepper… I need to find a site which can ship- wait, can you even ship that stuff for an individual customer overseas? O__O

  • Steins;Gate reminds me how much I've been missing a real plot-driven show. Things like Korezombie just don't cut it most of the time – I get bored halfway through D=

Okay, good, I'm not crazy for thinking Mr. Titor is probably Okarin.

    I want that cake…!

This is just getting more and more interesting! And Makise Kurisu pwning Okarin was just priceless. XD

My only complaint is the maid cafe and the trap…just….just WHY?!
