Sekijitsu’s Best of Winter Anime 2010/11
With Madoka over, winter’s finally ended, and spring is in the air. And as the sun starts to shine a little more brightly and flowers start to bloom quite beautifully, we’ve decided to celebrate by honoring what we loved (and didn’t love) from Winter 2011.
So yes, here we are presenting our first ever seasonal awards! We tried to cover as many bases and shows as possible, but even the awards here reflect that we at Sekijitsu found Winter 2011 a season of quality, not quantity. Most of the shows this season were quite lackluster, but the shows that were great were really great.
Whether or not you agree, we hope you enjoy our farewell to the winter season, and let’s hope for a fantastic spring!

DaydreamSyndrome//YumekuiMerry Yumekui Merry failed to stand out enough to win any srs bzn awards for the winter season; its storytelling and characters were the epitome of average–not terrible by any means, but definitely not spectacular either. Fortunately, its OP is more than awesome. The visuals are dark and atmospheric, the singing by Fujiwara Marina fits perfectly with the montages, and it’s all-around quite badass. Around the halfway mark the song really picks up, and it starts getting as crazy as you’d expect for a show about messing around with dreams.

Connect//MahouShoujoMadokaMagica The airing of Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica episode 10 set the anime blogosphere aflame as proclamations of “epic,” “brilliant,” and “legendary” spread like wildfire. We’d like to do less flashy homage to it here. “Connect,” the epitome of a cliche magical girl opening sequence, becomes more and more ironic as Madoka Magica progresses. But we’re awarding it Best Ending because we think its ironic impact reaches in its peak when it airs as the ending to Madoka Magica’s episode 10. After all, in episode 10, we finally learn of Homura’s story and heartbreak… and find ourselves back at the beginning once again. Runner-up: For You (Hourou Musuko) |

NitoriShuichi//HourouMusuko Traps, we all know them. Some love them, some hate them. Some spend all their free time trying to be them at anime conventions. Others spend time watching them in games or anime wondering “I wonder what that would be like”… or at least some do, and, come on, who doesn’t want to try being the opposite sex for a day out of sheer curiosity? So why does this rambling make Nitori the Best Underaged Trap? Well because he simply doesn’t care what the the world thinks about him (much). He genuinely wants to be a girl and he knows that and nothing is going to stop him. Even going to school in a skirt and that takes some serious balls. “Why not Takatsuki?” we hear you say. Well, it is easier for girls. As the show quite amply demonstrates since she only gets a smack on the wrist and an increased fan base while Nitori’s thought to be mentally-ill and is suddenly rejected by everyone. For his bravery, he wins our Best Underaged Trap award. |

CharlotteDunois//InfiniteStratos
Although Infinite Stratos pretends it’s a mecha/harem combo meal, it mostly falters in both aspects, leaving the aftertaste kind of bland. The mecha premise is a joke (though those suits are kind of hot), and the girls are all stereotypes who quickly and inexplicably fall in love with the limpdick lead. Well, all the girls except for Charlotte Dunois who keeps her charm and cuteness even when she pretends to be a dude. She turns a bit into moeblob like all the girls by the end of it, but still, she deserves our thanks (and our Best Hnnng Character Award) for adding a tinge of sweet and spice to Infinite Stratos. |

VictoriqueDeBlois//Gosick
Geez, Gosick has some dumb mysteries–oh wait! There’s Victorique! Look at those puffy cheeks! Isn’t she so adorable? Dawww… … Perhaps BONES realized the mysteries of light-novel detective series Gosick wouldn’t translate well onto the small screen. Or perhaps they realized if they just poured their whole budget–writing and animation–onto the tiny, blonde pipe-smoker, the show would still keep the viewers coming. After all, we here at SJ still tune into Gosick, and it’s not because of the murder cases. In fact, the reason why is no mystery at all, and that’s why Victorique’s the winner of Winter 2011′s Best Moe Distraction from a Lousy Story Award. Runner-up: Nessa (Fractale) |

SugataShindou&TakutoTsunashi//StarDriver Baka-Ouji aside, the winter season is distressingly short on solid male leads, but no worries. The fabulosity of Star Driver provides not one but two relatively flat but extremely fierce protagonists for us to ogle over. Their personalities may not be particularly impressive, but Takuto is the GINGA BISHOUNEN and Sugata is Samekh, the golden peacock, so really–how could we not honor that? In addition, in the tradition of Sekijitsu, Sugata and Takuto provide that yaoi loving tension that we all crave so much. Who doesn’t want to be Wako in the end? Well, except for some of the ladies here, kukukukuku. |

SawakoKuronuma&ShoutaKazehaya//KiminoTodoke
Try to think of a couple as perfect for each other as Sawako and Kazehaya. It takes a really long time to think of any couple that is even close. In anime we have our epic couples and our adorable couples. Two guesses which category these two fall into. If you watched Kimi ni Todoke there is no way that you don’t believe this couple to be worthy of this award. After all you just spent almost forty episodes tearing your hair out over when the two of them were going to get together. Though if you were that into it you probably read the manga and realized that there is even more to come from this cute couple. We here at Sekijitsu certainly wouldn’t mind a season three just to see them together again. Though after all of this, there is one question that bugs the heck out of us, and we’re sure it’s bugged you too: how the hell are these two ever going to have sex? |

MizunoYou//StarDriver
We fell in love with Mizuno. We watched Mizuno’s story unfold with fascination as she suffered through the hardships of being a maiden, realized her first love, and had a mental breakdown. We stopped caring about plot holes and repetitiveness because Mizuno was so awesome. Then they took Mizuno away. We RAEGED. We cried. We concocted a whole scheme involving flying over to Japan, tying the creators of this show to the back of a pickup truck and then pouring tubs of butter down their throats while laughing as they suffocated to death for daring to get rid of Mizuno. (Okay, that’s a lie, but you get the point.) So why is Mizuno so awesome? She’s quirky, unique, cute, and overall fun to watch. There is no dull moment when Mizuno is around, and with such an emotionally gripping story, is it surprising that she managed to come out on top as the Best Supporting Female of Winter 2011? We at SJ will always remember her, even if she wasn’t around for the most important parts of the show. Runner-up: Mami (Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica) |

SundaGranitz//Fractale
You know how you can tell a character is great? When they make babies cry, punch the generic-as-hell protagonist in the face, shoot grannies, and go pedophile for sixteen-year-old girls. …Okay, but seriously, he punched Clain in the face. He did what we here at Sekijitsu have been wishing we could do since the first episode aired–is it any wonder that Sunda, the only character in the show who seems to have his act together, won this position by a landslide? He wins Best Supporting Male Character because he supported us, the viewers, by gloriously acting out our desires, and so it is our pleasure to bestow upon him this award as acknowledgment for his awesomeness. Runner-up: Makoto Ariga (Hourou Musuko) |

SawakoKuronuma//KiminoTodoke
Slim, pale, dark-haired–to her high school classmates, there’s an aura to her, but not the sweet, cheerful kind you might feel around Snow White. They call her “Sadako,” known to some of us as “that creepy girl from Ringu” (or Scary Movie 3). But that’s not her name, and she’s not out for revenge, nor to curse and kill. Her name is Sawako, meaning “refreshing,” and while the lesser characters of Kimi ni Todoke fail to realize it at first, we’re instantly charmed and refreshed by her earnest, sweet, and considerate character. She gives it her all every time and tries her best not to disappoint anyone despite all of those who constantly misunderstand and slander her. Sawako is one of the most honest and hardest working female characters this season. Without having to change herself or act aggressively, she manages to improve herself and speak her mind. It’s because of these humbling qualities that we can’t help but cheer Sawako on as she stumbles through romantic shoujo-manga clichés and makes Kimi ni Todoke entirely her own. Runner-up: Yoshino Takatsuki (Hourou Musuko) |

BakaKiElDogra//LevelE
Although he’s not quite the biggest troll of the Winter 2011 anime season (that belongs to a suspicious, red-eyed furball from Madoka), Prince Baka Ki El Dogra (better known as Baka-Ouji, or translated as Prince Moron) comes quite close. He’s the type who’d trick his employee into believing they’ll go to war with the deadliest alien race in the galaxy or kidnap five kids and make them fight as Color Rangers. No, we’d never like to work for him nor invite him as a house guest, but he’s more than welcome to grace our computer and TV screens any time he’d like. He may not be a great guy, but he’s certainly great entertainment, and that’s enough to award him with Winter 2011‘s Best Lead Male Character. |

Kyuubey//MahouShoujoMadokaMagica
Best for last, as they say, and it’s a known fact in anime the best characters are villains. Still, few anime villains ever reach the heights of Kyuubey. He inappropriately touches little girls before stealing their souls, eats his own body like cottage cheese, breaches the laws of thermodynamics, and never regrets his actions once. In fact, if you were as logical as him, you’d realize the destruction of Earth isn’t cruel; it’s all just for the greater good and some complete BS about entropy. Where’s a law degree when you need it? Additionally, he’s a brilliant marketing tool. Mascots are prime market material, and who wouldn’t want a Kyuubey plush toy? He’ll keep you warm when you sleep at night. Really warm… if that’s what you wish. P.S. If you feel like sacrificing yourself for the universe, please give him a call. /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\ |

InfiniteStratos We’ll never pretend Infinite Stratos is deep, but we’ll never deny its entertainment value. A show with the premise of a boy going to an all-girls school is tried and true and utterly cliche, but still, we inevitably clicked the DL button with every coming episode. Between the mecha and the harem and Charlotte Dunois and those painted-on body suits, Infinite Stratos captured our attention to the point where even we will have to concede it’s a true guilty pleasure. Plus, this show had the best girls in bikinis and the best school uniforms. We could have done much worse in the cheap entertainment department. |

Beelzebub
Diapers exist for a reason. PANTS exist for a reason. Even socks would be an improvement! But for some reason the creators of Beelzebub decided that those things aren’t important and instead they should just let Baby Beel sit around in the nude. We at Sekijitsu do not condone child pornography. Thirteen episodes and Oga still can’t splurge for some diapers? What manner of pedophile undertones be this?! Beelzebub has earned itself the title of “Most Unwelcome Nudity” because it’s pretty much unanimous with not just us but everyone watching the show that Baby Beel needs to put that thing away. |

Rio:RainbowGate
Unless you have the same taste as our good friend Will from the DDD podcast, you won’t like this at all. With shiny, over-the-top breast sizes, watchers are more likely to notice how Rio’s boobs bounce than the story. Sadly, some of us at SJ marathoned the series only to realize we just wasted a few hours of our life! Of course, we didn’t vote Rio for “Best Trainwreck” just because of Rio’s breasts but the shallow story itself. The “goddess of victory” helps people win jackpots at casinos yet we all know casinos don’t want to lose money but take your money. Does this not contradict what a casino does? Maybe if Rio: Rainbow Gate didn’t focus too much on their fan service and polished up on their story, it might of been a better show. But overall it wasn’t, and so Rio: Rainbow Gate wins the Best Trainwreck award! |

Fractale Regardless of whether you “liked” or “hated” it, the general consensus should be, and is here at Sekijitsu, that Fractale is the most disappointing show of Winter 2011. It managed to charm us prior its airdate with gorgeous promotional artwork, interesting character designs, and “original story” slapped on in neon lights. We watched with anticipation as the show started off slow and cute, provoking us with unique ideas, interesting themes, and a fascinating world unknown to us. It went on and had all the pieces of a typical adventure-anime puzzle. When it ended, everything was in place. The problem: all the pieces were from different puzzles (probably from ages 10 and under puzzles, with a few adult ones thrown in to seem intricate). Fractale seemed as though its writers were awkward middle-school kids who decided to split up the chapters amongst themselves; it was as though they had just began to understand typical anime archetypes, thought of a few super cool ideas, made-up many “deep” themes to throw in and forget in the end, and used their own pretentiousness to cover-up for the fact the story was horribly written. Goodbye, Yamakan. This has been an embarrassing way to end things. |

LevelE
The premise of an uber troll alien prince sounds like a great one, right? Well, it is in Level E. Too bad no one saw it. Despite Baka-Ouji’s hilariously evil antics, Level E went largely neglected by the anime fandom. That’s why here at Sekijitsu we’re giving it a shout-out as the most underrated anime of winter 2011. Sure, the production values aren’t particularly high and there is a slight dip in quality during the middle, but that doesn’t change that the series has a witty script, interesting characters, and tackles a great variety of different genres. With a very strong start and strong finish, Level E executes well on its gimmicky premise, and makes the series pure, understated entertainment from the first episode to the thirteenth. MahouShoujoMadokaMagica During the pre-season previews, the pundits were skeptical. Shaft, a hit-or-miss studio, was tackling magical girl, pretty much a “miss” genre. There were some big names working on it, but the girls had pita faces, and besides, Shinbo. His techniques were so pretentious, used only to fill up space and make up for a lack of budget. And when Madoka started, the reviews were mixed. It looked alright, though that OP had too much loli fanservice. But then came episode three. We all know what happened from there. Gotta give it to Shaft. On the surface, Madoka’s graphics may be a mix of collage and pancake face (both possibly illustrated by six-year-olds), but they’re actually symbolic and inventive. Madoka’s genre may be the most formulaic and tired, but Madoka employed its genre’s cliches and made one heck of a tale despite them. And it may only be the winter airings, but 2011 has produced an instant classic, let alone our season’s Best Show. |

We hope you enjoyed our winter roundup between the traps, evil aliens, the tutus, and the entropy. A lot of the winners here were very close calls during the voting process, and many sweat, blood, and tears were produced to finally reach these results. Now, that we’ve got them, we have to ask: what shows do you think needed to win? Do you generally agree with us, or are we at SJ off our rockers? (That last one’s quite possible, but there’s nothing wrong with that!)
Additionally, we need to credit both Random Curiosity and a slew of Japanese artists for the raw pictures in the post. Bass took the stunning graphics and worked his Photoshop magic on them, but no, we didn’t draw any of these or cap most of them.
Thanks for reading, and we’ll see you again at the end of spring!

The night the subs came out I got on Skype with Tsuke and we marathoned the whole thing in one go. Around 6 hours. I cried and wailed at the end for over an hour. I was unable to emotionally cry for over half a year, Madoka taught me how to cry again.

Sunda's in this post. HE'S IN THIS POST!! I'm so happy nothing can express my joy, because SOMEONE ACTUALLY APPROVES OF SUNDA. *cry tears of joy* I disapprove Fractale's ending too, especially that Sunda part. But you might want to give Fractale the manga a try, since the ending is anime-original.
I approve all of the awards of this series, except for Victorique. Obviously, Nessa is doing a better job at distracting people with her cute voice. And Victorique is too tsundere I bet she'll have wrinkles before she's in her 50s.
Also, good job! I'm loving all of the design and the pictures! Bass should design my future house
SUNDA DESERVES MORE LOVE!! :'D

I have to agree with a lot of these. I prefer Gosick's opening an endings than the ones here. (was there no runner up for the opening?)
As much as i love the Prince i like Dean Winchester more. Fractale was disappointing, yes, but at least i managed to finish it, but i dropped Beelzebub even knowing it was a popular manga. Also replace Sunda with Kraft :p
Really enjoyable read and who was smart enough to understand entropy? and be able to use it in a sentence tehehe.
(The graphics and the whole layout of this post is awesome, that Mami header is cool, except those boobs, they kind of weird XD)
My recent post Is it just me Hmmm
Oooh, I love the Gosick opening, too. Gotta give it to Bones to make the best openings. Everyone had a different nomination for best OP though. My personal fave had to be Level E.
That was me, but that has nothing to do with smarts. I know very little about entropy, only that Star Driver and Madoka used it wrong. xD
Bass did the graphics, though I can't say I mind how Mami's boobs look. B) I can respect a girl who refuses to wear a bra. :D
Star Driver used entropy too? Along with Fractale that makes three shows in one season.
Level E opening was cool but i liked the graphics more than i liked the song :p.
My recent post Is it just me Hmmm
Star Driver didn't use Entropy, it used Libido and "Entropeople".
I second what Noble said about the boobs… they're weird.

Char-chan so HHHHNNNGGGG~
The best couple goes to Sawako and Kazehaya! I can't wait to share this to my ultrasound tech friends. I totally like this couple.
What the hell? Sunda? Cleary that guy from Level E was the best male supporting chara-
I stand corrected
don't forget, he shoot grannies too
Good job! It looks really pretty (:
I agree with most of the choices here too
Bass, this thing is gorgeous. I have to say I love how you used this as an opportunity to show off your Mami fanart collection. :p
Argh, the more people talk about Rio the more I want to watch it and savor the trainwreck. It’s been too long since I’ve watched a bad anime just so I could see it fail.
Anyway, nice list! I didn’t watch a whole lot this Winter, and I even failed to watch Madoka, so it’s nice to get a taste of what I missed. And nthing the nice pictures sentiment, this post looks really nice!
WOW nice awards hahaha love the pictures :P
CHARLES YES!! <3 very Hnnnnnngggg YAY Stardriver awards! Agreed Takuto and Sugata are great bros, have fun with the BL there girls.
Madoka is definitely great! Yes!
Forgot to mention Yumekui Merry OP = AWESOME I Love the guitar :P
By now you should just mentally insert a "THOSE GRAPHICS ARE GODLY" to all of my comments on any post like this. So clean and sleek~
I agree with most of these. Especially with Rio as the biggest trainwreck and Fractale as the biggest disappointment. Let's just erase those 2 from our memory now…<_< Winter was such a bad season for me, I only really liked 2 shows D:
Wait a minute: I thought "Connect" was the OP theme of Madoka, wasn't it? Or haven't I watched the last episodes to know this?
No FTC, your not wrong. Connect was the OP but it was also used as the ED for episode 10 in Madoka (as I've heard since I haven't watched it). We at Sekijitsu decided to discuss over it and see if we should change it or not but in the end we left it. Also if you read what we wrote for the ED award you'll understand why we chose it. Unless of course you DIDN'T read it.
My personal favourite would have to be the runner up (For You) which I was rooting for ;D
My recent post Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko 02
I liked the Level E one the best.
My recent post Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko 02
First of all, a really great post.
Dont even remember the animes aired last season.lol. Anyway, i agree with this list, it makes sense. Last season was a big bummer though, many animes that was expected to be good ended up being bad. Havent seen Madoka yet, been a little busy, need to catch up on that.
Yay, it's finally here! =D Props to Renn for getting the ball rolling and Bass for making this ridiculously gorgeous *_* I still need to finish up some series from winter although I have to say it was kind of meh overall with HM and Madoka as the only exceptions. Can't wait for best of spring ;D
CHARLOTTTE <3
I pretty much agree with everything on this awards list. And what a beautiful list it is. You have to teach me how to make these pretty graphics sometimes BASS..I'll pay you with a lifetime supply of free cake..
Also, that Kyubey picture is creepy, thank you for the nightmares I will have tonight.
My recent post Ao no Exorcist 01
You don’t know how much I hated that picture from Bassun! ><” Why did you have to add it back!??! Oh the memories…. OH THE MEMORIES!!!!! “OTL
Connect isn't ironic, it tells the story of Homura (though it takes 10 episodes for us to realize that). And "The blue sky is always waiting for me" –> that moment in the finale episodes against Walpurgis.
Level E is great, and MIZUNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO~~~~~~<3<3<3
Madoka is my all time favorite anime now >.< I cried at the end ;_;
My recent post Charlotte Interviews! Who do you admire as a role model
Aww, shoot, you're right, my bad. I had written it before Madoka had aired (we planned to get it out last weekend), and while it worked then, it doesn't all work now. Can't believe I missed editing it. Darn that happy ending! xD
Madoka is an awesome anime. It'll take a heck of an anime to top it this year. ^_^
You said it was very ironic after 10, which it isn't because it's about Homura keeping her promise with Madoka. 10 is what makes Connect so meaningful.
Every time I come here, the banner keeps changing wow *-*I think the original Mami looked the best.
let's see… Charlotte (Madoka Magica) in human form can match up with Victorique xD and haven't watched Level E, IS, Beelzebub and Rio. Didn't finish Star Driver yet so I can't say much except for the fact that the pic of Kyubey is creepy!~~ all the photoshopping looks really nice ;D
My recent post Ao No Exorcist – 02
I think this banner is just temporary publicity for the post. :)
Charlotte in human form is adorable (and has the best fanart), but I don't think we got to see her in the anime (except in the silhouette). Bass picked the picture of QB, and it still gives me nightmares. xD
Damn this post is epic. And an obligatory haha, I told you so (to no one in particular), for Fractale as biggest disappointment. ;-)
well… look at that. This is awesome. agree with most of it and I assumed madoka deserved the award because I haven't seen it yet but can see how everyone went crazy about it.
My recent post Ao no Exorcist- Episode 2
T-this is so beautiful :sob:
Sawahaya are NEVER gonna do it. as much i would like so say "yes" it wont be happening in the next million years. They are just too innocent. Knowing Sawako, doubt she even knows what "doing it" fully involves. -_-'….and another part of me just wants to see them stay that way forever. >//<
Charles/Charlotte is one hell of a chick. True she sort of turned out to be like those other love-sick girls, but at least she had the common sense not to fall in love at first site…either way, i would've preferred if ichika had ended up with her…T-T
I plan to get to Star Driver and Level E soon. Probably marathon it before school starts. :)
As for Madoka, no matter how hight the ratings get or how many people threaten me to watch it, i will NEVER go near it even if my life depended on it. NEVER!!. It's just too scary!!DX
But overall, AWESOME post. Just what i needed to get some opinions and ideas on what to watch.
The banners are AMAZIIINNG!!!~ (as usual) yep yep, no doubt they always are what catch my attention. XD

MADOKA ISN'T SCARY
My recent post Charlotte Interviews! Who do you admire as a role model
There's nothing scary about it besides Kyuubey's ruby eyes staring into the depths of your soul (if you're lucky enough to still have one).
My recent post Attention Bloggers…!
I still need to watch Madoka…… >.> heheh ^^"
The graphics made me nosebleed. Bass, you graphic awesomeness!
I agree with most of the above except for the OP/ED choices (for me it was OP ‘Cold Finger Girl’ and ED “Magia” by Kalafina), which reminds me Connect is not the ED but OP of Madoka.
Level E should get more love and same for Sunda & Mizuno (I preferred her song to Monochrome which was second best out of Star Driver).
