Summer 2011 Anime Preview

Introduction

Summer huh? Well for me and Tofu, we’re going into the deep, dark days of winter. Hell, it hasn’t stopped raining for 2 weeks now…..but I’ll try not to be the kill-joy here. With my first full anime season nearly coming to an end, I’m really excited to see how my first “summer” with anime will turn out. Reading all the other’s thoughts on the season though, it seems like summer is often the lame-duck of the year and looking at the chart, I have to agree.

While compiling this list, only a few really stands out but I’m hoping for at least 3 or 4 to pick up and enjoy. Hell, spring is really good for me since I’m currently following around 6 series weekly, and loving them as well. Here’s hoping summer will bring the same joy, even in my gloomy, dark surroundings.

Oh and we have a guest for this season’s installment, but I’ll leave the introductions to him later on in this section.

☆☆☆

It’s Summer! School is out, the sun is shining, and all the youths are smiling brightly as they enjoy their vacation! …..Unless they’re like me, and they hate sunlight, bugs, people, sweat, visiting relatives and short sleeves, so instead they lock themselves in the basement and watch anime all Summer in the dark. Then they hype themselves up, instead, for the Summer anime season! WOOO!!!

Although there seems to be a lot of harem, pantsu, and mediocre adaptations planned for the Summer season, there are also quite a few promising things coming out. I’m not as enthusiastic as I was with the Spring preview, but I’m still looking forward to a lot of the Summer stuff. It seems like there are some good horror shows coming out, and how could I not be psyched for VAMPIRE KITTIES?! HELL YEAH! HURRY UP, SUMMER 2011!!

☆☆☆

Even though summer is absolutely my favorite season of the year, it’s not exactly as amazing for anime. Especially compared to the jampacked spring lineup we’re having right now! There’s a few series here and there that look intriguing, but I definitely don’t know what to expect; there really aren’t a lot of familiar names, unlike the well-known manga adaptations from last season. And there’s also barely any laidback slice-of-life too, which is what I love to kick back and enjoy most during those lazy summer days… although Noitamina’s two shows definitely look like they have potential to be awesome, so they’re at the top of my list.

☆☆☆

Summer is the time for beaches, sun, surfing, tanning, and, of course, cooping up next to the AC, watching anime on a computer. I’d say the last bit sounds a tad sad, but considering some of the fun-looking titles coming our way this season, it’s hardly the worst way to get at least part of your summer on. I’ve been pretty happy with the spring season so far, but I’m happier still to move on to warmer weather and new anime!

☆☆☆

Wait… its summer anime already!? Time sure does fly by fast but was I having fun? With school work piling up one by one each day, I don’t think so. Yet let’s not worry about that minna-san! We’re all here to witness Bass’ extraordinary digital skills the new summer animes of 2011. Besides, I’m sure most of you don’t worry about reading these since it’s just too long. Scroll down and take a look at what Sekijitsu has to say for these upcoming new shows! Let the summer anime preview begin!

☆☆☆

When you see a red smirk full of mischief, you know that the TRazor is in town. The TRazor thought “Hey, let’s go over to Sekijitsu, leech some of Bass’s sexy graphics and save on my blog’s bandwidth!” (Bass – pretty sure you don’t pay for blogspot so there is no bandwidth :P) and poor Bass, unaware of TRazor’s ulterior motives succumbed to his aura of awesomeness. After all, just the digital voice of the TRazor is enough to make even the toughest man, woman and Pokemon swoon. So, anyway, my raw manliness aside, doing season previews is kind of an aniblogger tradition and due to my indolence (I don’t use superfluous English often) to write in my own blog I decided to join the jolly gang here at Sekijitsu. So, yeah, thanks for having me over, fellas.

Coming to the season itself, well, it looks to be just about average. A couple of my friends hinted that the summer lineup is unimpressive every year and this year certainly seems to backup their claim. A spoonful of shows look appealing, but the rest of them look dreadfully generic, but then again, aren’t all seasons like that? As usual all studios slap a girl with ginormous eyes on their posters as if we would be thinking “Oh this show has a girl, then I’ll surely watch it”. I guess Japan just likes making anime with a lot of girls (and yet, almost all of them have uninteresting personalities. Go figure). Let’s get started then.

☆☆☆

The summer season list was like a cheap shot to the diaphragm. I’m still behind on spring shows and suddenly “HEY LOOK SUMMER’S HERE!” Kicking me while I’m still down, eeeeh ):< Looking over the chart, it doesn’t pump you up as much as the spring season did, but that’s to be expected! After all, there’s no Kaiji… but there are still shows that look fairly promising. Otherwise, it’s a bit underwhelming. Summer’s more of a season to catch up on shows you missed from previous seasons, in my case.

No.6//Renn’sThoughts

No. 6 marks the third collaboration between BONES and Noitamina, which means you can count on one thing: glorious animation. Studios tend to go all out with their short Noitamina shows on the budget front, and since BONES’s animation is only consistently bested by KyoAni’s, I’ve no doubt this will be a visual feast.

That said, visuals aren’t the only things worth watching a show for, but there does look like there’ll be substance beneath the glossy cover. The original source material is decent dystopian fiction though the BL overtones are a little overbearing. Weirdly, this marks Kenji Nagasaki’s first time as anime director, but Series Composer Seishi Minakami is incredibly experienced with titles such as Birdy the Mighty Decode, Fullmetal Alcehmist: Brotherhood, and Satoshi Kon’s Paprika under his belt. I doubt this’ll be groundbreaking, but I’m sure it’ll fit right in with other Noitamina titles as a solid show.

AppleSeedXIII//Tofu’sThoughts

If you look back at the spring previews, Bass once said that Appleseed might be postponed till next season. As you know, that assumption has come true but fear not Appleseed lovers! It’s finally here minna-san! As I’ve also stated myself in the spring previews, I personally dislike CG based animes but Appleseed is different.

I love the idea of how Deunan and Briareos are partners and lovers at the same time, fighting for Olympus when trouble strikes. Though it’s not new considering it’s a retelling of the manga, I’ve never heard of Appleseed so this is quite new to me. Definitely giving it a try and you should too.

BakatoTesttoShoukanjuuNi!//Elyon’sThoughts

The first season of Baka to Test was nice for some brainless comedy. It was repetitive and chock full of cliches, yet somehow it still managed to be amusing. You’re not going to find anything deep or complex in it, but it was definitely a good show to check out if you just want something fun and nonsensical to watch. Since the same staff that worked on the first season will be returning for the second season, I’m sure we can probably expect more of the same, especially since the OVA showed that this anime has far from lost it’s charm.

BLADE//Renn’sThoughts

Silly as they were, I loved the Blade movie trilogy. Each installment got progressively worse, but I just couldn’t shake my shackles as a loyal BLADE fan. And I’ve got a bad feeling I’ll be unable to shake them here.

Madhouse’s superhero experiments have been consistently mediocre, but I will point out that BLADE seems to have a decent director behind it. Director Mitsuyuki Masuharu has worked on some charming anime like Chi’s Sweet Home and Kobato, and I’m interested in seeing what he’ll do with an action series like BLADE. Of course, this is probably all just a ploy to get my hopes up. The writer, Kenta Fukasaku, has almost no credentials (at least under that pen name), and besides, it’s Madhouse plus Marvel. Two great studios that, together, just can’t get it right.

BLOOD-C//Elyon’sThoughts

Blood+ was a pretty decent show, and I’m already in love with the art style of CLAMP, so this seems really promising. The director for this did a good job with xxxHolic, my favorite CLAMP adaptation, and I like Production I.G. Plus, even with that incredibly vague trailer, you can tell this Saya kicks ass! Add in a plethora of bishies and I’m sold! This doesn’t seem to be a sequel, but I think it takes place in the same world as the previous Blood anime, so it should be interesting to see how this compares to Blood+. Knowing CLAMP, the old Saya will probably pop out of some kind of magical vortex with Fai D. Flowright and Kamui or something. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad but…

I am such a sucker for the promo art. The character designs are so pretty, and the setting is vaguely victorian england-ish (let the Gosick comparisons commence! Yeah, I’m guilty of that). It’s also surprisingly gory. (By my standards… which are pretty low.) But hey, at least they bothered making the guy as cute as the cool-but-secretly-moe-long-haired-female-mystery-solver. What’s somewhat unique about anime is that a lot of them can be really plot-driven compared to the episodic nature of western tv, so I don’t think I’ll watch all of this series if it’s just a series of standalone mysteries without any overarching plotline… something about that bothers me in anime.

I would watch this just to listen to that background music; I am a huge fan of background accordion. Even though the animation looks a little bit off sometimes, the character designs are adorable; heck, the entire premise is adorable. And I actually like that the director of Shugo Chara is behind this, because although that anime was obviously aimed at kids, it was entertaining and amusing enough for me to watch 52 episodes of it (until they added more seasons and it just got… bad). This and Usagi Drop look too cute to ignore this season <3

Vampires (AKA Ancient Sorcerers), forgotten promises and memories, people bent on revenge and resurrection… SOLD! So I’ve never heard of this EVER before having to choose what to write about in this post and I feel this one has the highest chance of me actually blogging it. The story sounds good, although I can see a ‘Yu-Gi-Oh’-esque narrative afoot but with less card games.

Zexcs are behind the show’s production and they are responsible for ‘Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu’; a show I absolutely loved and can’t wait to see if they animate the sequel, as well as shows like ‘Da Capo’ and ‘H2O’. So I am really hopefully that the show is going to be well made and the plot is told in an interesting yet unusual fashion.

KaitouTenshiTwinAngel//Tofu’sThoughts

The first thing that popped into my head when I saw the trailer was “oh my goodness, its sailor moon during her early primary school life!” This is definitely not a show for me but for all you readers who are into this sort of stuff, I will humbly continue just for you. So it’s about two girls being normal school girls during the day and fight villains during night which scores a big ‘generic’ point for being so… predictable.

As I say that, another Sailor Moon reference I want to point out is the ‘guy-with-mask-on’ which is also in the trailer. I mean, come on J.C Staff, is this really how you operate? BUT! Since a very notable person who goes by the name Noto Mamiko voices in this anime, maybe you might change your mind! As that is said, if you’re a Noto Mamiko fan (Flags?), or enjoy this sort of anime then Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel is the anime for you! As I’ve stated at the top, I won’t be watching this show because of what it is and even with Noto Mamiko in it, it won’t change my mind at all.

Kami-saminoMemo-chou//Mint’sThoughts

I read a few chapters of the manga and it was decent, although they really push the NEET thing as a gimmick instead of focusing more on the characters themselves. Still, the designs are gorgeous. The artist was also in charge of Hanasaku Iroha’s designs, so at the very least, they’ll be pretty to look at. I have a bad feeling that this is going to turn out as bland and unoriginal as the past dozen shows J.C. Staff has created, because from what I read, the story was pretty boring– but thankfully the Ordinary Teenage male lead isn’t anywhere near as wimpy as Kujo… and like Elyon pointed out, was Gosick such a success that there’s a new interest in cute girl detectives?

KamisamaDolls//Trzr23′sThoughts

Brain’s Base score a brace this season. My initial thoughts after seeing the name and the synopsis was that it would be some voodoo-battle game with cute girls spattering blood all over each other by poking needles into dolls. However, after reading the manga, my opinion has changed. Apparently, these dolls are battle weapons, and the protagonist’s Battle Brawler Godbot looks extraordinarily like… Pokeball-Kyubey?

Coming to the actual story, it’s nothing exceptional, because they managed to roll in a lot of cliches within the first couple of chapters, such as the hero moving into his lady love’s house, a moe sister tagging along and of course, a legendary robot. But at the end of the day, Brain’s Base can convert this into a successful series by just doing away with the nonsense and shifting the spotlight to the grim atmosphere (and gore!). I’ll let this rest on the MAYBE section for a while.

ManyuuHikenchou//Vivi’sThoughts

“Breasts. They are this world’s rights and privilege.” Talk about female empowerment! This definitely isn’t for a lot of people, like Tofu (idk, I imagine he prefers more moe moe kyun~ sort of things) or Tzr23 (who hates random flashes of nudity/bewbs/panties/fanservice). Although, in this case, the fan-service isn’t exactly random – breasts are the main focus of this anime! It’s even in the title — “Evil Breast Clan.” Don’t be too distracted by the breasts, though, because there’s an actual storyline, believe it or not. This is an ecchi anime with a period-era ninja twist, so there will be action. Also, lesbians. Ninja lesbians.

http://oppaidaisuki.jp/

OPPAI DAISUKI = I LOVE BREASTS. The big seller of this show is very obvious, even the studio (Hoods — they have same studio & director as Seikon no Qwaser) is being honest about it! Don’t watch this and then be surprised and offended by the amount of boobies flashed and sexual body exposure. If it’s not your thing, then don’t worry about it. I know I won’t. If you liked Samurai Girls or maaaaybe Seikan no Qwaser (lolololololol) then this might be for you. Or, if you’re a girl who is hoping to grow nice breasts, then Manyuu Hikenchou might be quiet useful! I already learned something reading the manga. XD

Well this seems a bit odd. There’s nothing to say with all the vague info that’s been released so far, but I hope it’s because it’ll make the actual show an unexpected surprise when it finally airs. The first thing I’d like to know is what penguins have to do with what looks like a pretty run-of-the-mill story about three sisters. (But oh well. Penguins make everything better.) I’ve never seen Utena but I’ve heard it’s amazing, which makes this all the more (mysteriously) intriguing…

I don’t know if it’s the sea blue eyes and the blond hair that made this show the most appealing out of the rest, but the story itself seems quite interesting. It might be generic for some but I don’t care about cliche. I only care about how the show’s being executed. Wait a minute… the boy is actually a girl!?!? It’s Charlotte from Infinite Stratos all over again! No wonder they added a touch of blonde and who’s that I see? Hanazawa Kana’s voicing one of the characters in the anime! I can’t say no to that and I’m definitely watching this since I’m intrigued by how they’ll keep it a secret. Though I’m getting a feeling it’s going to be filled with ecchi and fan service.

I don’t even know where to start with this one. Since it’s one of those Slice of Life shows that I’m not a huge fan of, since you know… if I wanted a ‘slice of life’ I’d get off my chair ring my friends and go do something. However as with the likes of Toradora some SoL shows do just catch my attention. This does not look like one of the them. From what I can tell from the videos on youtube the animation is bland at best, I know some would defend that it’s simplistic (and it is) but it’s bland. Hourou Musuko was simple but it was beautiful at the same time.

Also the plot isn’t exactly attention grabbing. A girl who over thinks everything so doesn’t talk? I over think plenty of things and still manage to get a conversation in there, she’s just rubbish. Right I’m going to stop ranting now before I offend someone.

This is both awesome and frustrating at the same time. On one hand, Natsume is an awesome show and I’m excited for the third season, but on the other hand…WHERE THE HELL IS MY DURARARA?! I know everyone keeps saying the same thing, but come on Brains Base! Get your priorities in order!!

Still, I’m pretty excited for the third season of Natsume- they have the amazing writer who did the script for Kino no Tabi this time, and this show has never really disappointed in the past. There’s no doubt that this will be one of the better, if not best, shows of the season.

Yes, finally a show about catwomen! It’s been a while since I watched that Halle Berry movie (not to forget Sharon Stone!) and damn, I can’t wait for an anime about woman wearing tight suits and messing around. Oh wait, I forgot that this is a 2011 anime, so all girls must either be moe and/or klutz and/or annoying. To top it all off, this series is a comedy. I guess this is the “Nichijou: Who Let the Cats Out?” version.

Apart from Seitokai Yakuindomo, no comedy anime has really made me laugh (with it). I caught the promo videos and they did nothing to change my impression. Guess some anime are just doomed from birth. AIC+ isn’t a well-renowned studio either, so this one’s a NO from me.

Having watched the first season, can’t really say I have high hopes for this one. The first season was nothing more than a test of patience and it contained minimal action, which is inexcusable considering it’s a shonen anime. It just refused to take itself seriously. Unless you enjoyed the first season, I recommend you stay far far away from this one. Obviously, a NO from over here.

OMFG KITTIES!!! Okay, haters gonna hate, but I think this will be pretty awesome. Have I mentioned yet that Fukuyama Jun is in this? PLAYING A FRIGGIN CAT?! Yeah. Everyone can go fangirl now. But seriously, this is Gonzo’s comeback here, so I’m assuming effort was put into making this good. While I wish they’d come back with something more like Gankutsuou, at least an attempt at being unique was made, and this doesn’t appear to be fanservice (unless Gonzo turns this into some kind of freaky cat porn….ಠ_ಠ), so I’ll definitely be checking this out. Plus, the one cat is named Dokuganryu Masamunya. Lulz? At least they’re being creative here.

R-15//Vivi’sThoughts

Why am I getting all the pervy shows? This is a romance harem & comedy anime, so try not to jump to the conclusion that R-15 = PR0NZ. I made the mistake of passing off Lotte’s Toy as some hardcore plot-less hentai, but according to reviews it’s actually a decent-ish show with an actual plot and no porn! Although R-15 partially involves porn, as evident from the title, I’m assuming the pr0nz (which hopefully we won’t see) is more of a plot device.

The main character is a high-school student whose secret is that he is also a pornographic novelist. He then enrolls in a school for geniuses… who also write pornography, I think. “He leads his classmates with his porn skills to win the interclass competition.” PORN SKILLS. Sounds like some pretty darn useful skills. I’m going to try it out, just to check how much porn is involved.

Ro-Kyu-Bu!//Tofu’sThoughts

Ro-Kyu-Bu might at first seem a bit unappealing since the main girls are all loli’s besides one. Let me tell you that the character designs aren’t so bad itself. I’ve never heard of Project no.9 or Studio Blanc but I’m definitely giving this one a try. I can see heaps of fluffy content and it might even be the ‘cool off’ show this summer. After watching Moshidora, I’ve really gotten into sport related animes and soon I’ll be tackling Eyeshield 21. I’m sure Bass would be happy to hear that.

One more note to take, one of the characters is voiced by the beloved Hikasa Yoko! How could I not dismiss this show! But one more thing. I myself don’t know if Ro-kyu-bu is an anime or not after watching the trailer. It really got me questioning whether or not it’s a drama or an anime series. Either way, I don’t mind at all!

SacredSeven//Renn’sThoughts

So, last time I talked about a new Sunrise program with mecha-overtones, I said it would probably be fierce and fabulous in the vein of Code Geass and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Well, I was right about Tiger & Bunny, but you can multiply what I said there by about ten. For one, Sacred Seven looks to be even more mecha, and for another… Have you looked at those character designs? Utterly campy and ridiculous, and with anime character designs, I can’t offer much higher praise than that.

As for the staff, Director Yoshimitsu Ohashi doesn’t seem to have a ton of directorial experience, but man, has he worked on a lot of shows. Series Composer Shin Yoshida, not so much, and his resume is a little worrying. He seems to have done a bunch of quasi-kiddie shows like Naruto and Yu-Gi-Oh, and Sacred Seven could certainly fall into the tweenage boy category. Be moderately excited, but if it turns out as cheesy as its title, don’t be too surprised.

I’m sure most of you know of the franchise and what you have to do in the games, but for those who don’t “The game follows the career of a producer who works for the fictional 765 Production studio and has to work with a selection of ten prospective pop idols.” There is currently only one PV showing any actual animation and it wasn’t a lot but it looks really nice, obviously what you want from a show focusing on attractive idols.

UsagiDrop//Trzr23′sThoughts

Those who follow me on my blog must’ve caught that post that had me whining on and on about the lack of parenting in anime. Why are protagonists always high school kids? How come parents have no significant say in any of the matters? When will the writers realize that the current fans will grow old and will give up anime that they can’t relate with? The answer to all those questions still remains a mystery, but this anime sure seems to have got my message loud and clear.

Usagi Drop is the first occupant of the noitaminA slot and while its success with the masses is more than a bit doubtful, I’m sure it will be adored by fans such as myself who are looking for something fresh. I had a look at the first few chapters of the manga and I was mighty impressed. Single parenting is the core premise of the story, but character development, work problems and self-revelation seem to be the other key elements. The protagonist, an average (slightly silly, maybe) worker is done excellently and his dry sense of humor struck a chord with me instantly. Oh, and the kid is portrayed pretty realistically and isn’t a moeblob or a brat.

All in all, I’m sold on this one, it has tremendous potential. YES. YES. YES. The anime doesn’t even need to do anything new, just follow the manga faithfully.

(What is up with that title? LOL) A reverse harem anime: one girl, three ~~~ bishounen ~~~ *sparkle sparkle*. The girl wants to be a songwriter, so somehow she ends up at a musical training school full of PRETTY BOYS. Dayuuum, girl hit the jackpot – boys who are musically talented and good-looking. If I end up liking this somehow, somehow, then it would probably be my guilty pleasure, like Glee. I want to hate it, but for some reason I can’t stop watching it! Damn you, Glee!

But to be honest, this sounds so painfully cheesy. Usually I end up despising shows with any sort of harem – standard, reverse, yaoi, yuri, whatever – so my opinion is clearly biased; but, on the bright side, at least the artwork looks nice. Character designs are okay… Not much else to say, really. If it’s based on the game, how will they characterize the female lead? Although I won’t be watching this, hopefully she won’t be painfully annoying.

A pervy-er, slashy-er version of Lucky Star, with 4th-wall-breaking tendencies. One of the characters thought they’d be getting their own drama series, but guess she’ll have to settle for an anime series instead! I’m skimming through the manga now, and while it’s a little repetitive, it’s pretty funny. Not a laugh-out-loud funny, but a silent-chuckle funny. It’s mostly thanks to the characters, who are all quirky, cute, and a little weird. Essentially this is another plotless lolis-doing-nothing anime with more girl-on-girl loving (though it’s always one-sided haha). It’ll be interesting to see these characters animated since they’re so energetic and always yelling at each other.

FinalThoughts

Ehhhhh~ there’s really only like 5 or 6 shows that I’m interested in, and based on past experience I’ll be lucky if even half of that manages to be entertaining enough to follow weekly. The noitamina shows hold the most promise as usual, since Usagi Drop looks so adorable with an excellent premise. No.6 should be the blockbuster of the two in the vein of C and Fractale while Usagi follows the slice-of-life/drama route like Ano Hana and Hourou Musuko. Hopefully these two pan out like spring’s noitamina slot, since I love both C and Ano Hana.

As for the others, Kamisama Dolls seems to have some gore and mystery going for it, as well as some possible voodoo so I’ll be keeping an eye on that. Dantalian also has a supernatural vibe to it but based on Trzr23′s research, it might be a bit too moe for my tastes. I guess I’ll just have to wait for the first episodes to gun down what I’m gonna blog for the season. One thing’s for sure though, I won’t be doing manga adaptations that I follow the manga of. Knowing the plot really kills the buzz every week so from now on, I’ll be blindly going into shows I know nothing about. Seems more fun that way.

And last but not least, a huge thank you to the writers for being willing to go through all this preview stuff again and a special thank you to Trzr23 for joining us on this ride. Hope you guys enjoyed reading this as much as it killed us to put it out.

I’ve never watched Blood+ or played Idolm@ster, so their spin-off/adaptations are the series that look the most unpredictable to me so far. Zero familiarity with the material means lower expectations and less room for disappointment, I guess :P I’ll probably marathon Natsume Yuujinchou, hopefully in time for the third season to start. It’s one of those shows that you always say you’re going to get around to but never really do. Other than that, I’m really looking forward to the less generic main relationships in No.6 and Usagi Drop; one looks like a bromance bordering on BL and the other is intergenerational, but they both look adorable. My possible blogging list is more of a watchlist since I’ll be away for most of the summer, but hopefully I’ll be able to fit in some anime-watching time now and then.

Unfortunately, I’ve got a pretty busy summer, and since Tiger & Bunny is twenty-five episodes, I’m not sure I’ll be picking up one of the series here. That said, it’s definitely not because I don’t want to–I’m actually more psyched for these shows than I was for the spring ones. Sure, we’ve had some quality programming for spring, but this season’s lineup looks so colorful, fun, and fabulous. That’s exactly what summer should be about, and summer is my favorite season.

If I didn’t have school and two jobs, I’d be fighting to blog a bunch of these. And either way I’m tuning in to No. 6, Usagi Drop, Sacred Seven, Blood-C, The IdolM@ster, Ikoku Meiro no Croisee, Dantalian’s Library, Kamisama Dolls, and Mawaru PenguinDrum.

Well… I don’t know about you but I’ve always thought of summer as the biggest season for anime since it’s the main season. Yet why is it the main season you might ask. It’s just a thought and now I know it’s not true, for anime that is. As for shows I’m looking forward to, there’s not much but I will be trying out each one of them before permanently giving my overall view on the series. Hope you all enjoyed our coverage of the summer preview. Who am I kidding, you don’t care about us; you’re only here for Bass’ extraordinary digital skills at work! Just look at it! Possibly Blogging: Appleseed XIII, Mayo Chiki, Usagi Drop, Kami-sama no Memo-chou and Ro-Kyu-Bu.

☆☆☆

I don’t know how this is any different from opening thoughts, but since I have some free space, I’ll spam it. This season received a shocking 14 NOs, a tiny 4 MAYBEs and a miniscule 3 YESs. As some of you might know, I don’t do episodics and of late, I have stopped following the shows week-by-week. I prefer to watch the show in three installments, gulping down four episodes at a stretch. Editorials will come out randomly, for any show because I’m pretty inconsistent and willing to give “weird anime” a second chance, so stay tuned. That’s all from me for now, cheers! TRazor out.

☆☆☆

Not many shows I’m absolutely looking forward to — I don’t care for harems, vampires, or flat chests. Okay, totally joking on the last one, but there aren’t many shows that seem too compelling. There’s Natsume’s Book of Friends,Baka to Test, and Nurarihyon no Mago, although they’re all continuing seasons. The anime I am most looking forward to is Usagi Drop! I love manga with single dads, but in most of the kind I read the kid ends up having two dads~ That won’t happen in Usagi Drop though hahaha. The movie is also coming out! Here’s a trailer for the live-action film. It looks so cute ♥

Possibly Blogging: Ikoku Meiro no Croisee & Mawaru Penguindrum

So what say you, dear blog reader? Anything here that tickles your fancy?

    No SHAFT. Not worth caring.

    I joke (sort of)

Im finding it hard to get exited about the summer anime as i have been really busy recently and that's not going to stop until the end of July, im already 3 or 4 episodes behind the current ongoing series with a multitude of DVDs on my backlog that i haven't touched.

No body thinking of blogging Baka to Test? probably the only show i AM exited about, mainly because the first season is hilarious. I have to see how things go as to whether i can watch as much as i would like too.
My recent post Harry Potter wallpaper i made for personal use Not too sure

    • Tofu says:

I've never actually seen Baka to Test and I wish you the best of luck in scraping out for free time Noblesse. Other than that, I would give you a first comment cookie but that's a Metanorn thing :3 Instead, what about some… mapo tofu!?

    • Huh, never realized that there's a lack of shaft in summer. Hopefully this just means that they're saving up for fall?

You should set some time for anime haha. I always try to squeeze something in right before I sleep on bed. Then again, I only watch anime on my PSP now
My recent post Sekaiichi Hatsukoi 10

  • I'm first! Very awesome and cool Preview :3 There's a good amount of TRAPS this summer xD As well, there's a few shows that I'm targeting like Blood-C, Sacred Seven, and Last Exile. :3

  • Did you smell what the TRazor was cooking?

Nice work by Bass on getting the work of all the writers to be displayed. I'm bored of complimenting your graphics. There'll be a few who will do that below anyway.

Excellent job by everyone else as well. Every blogger has now sat firmly on the noitaminA spot and has started watching all of its shows religiously. I think the choice of shows has been unanimous in any case. Was great fun. this. Cheers to SJ :)

And now, excuse me while I go tell my MAL friends that I made this entire post, graphics and all.

Kami-Memo, Rokyubu, Mayochiki and Baka to Test are definitely on my must watch list.

I found Light Novel version of Kami Memo to be much more entertaining than the manga, as well as Mayo Chiki. Baka Test has been one of the funniest series I have read and watched, and Rokyubu made me laugh a little while I also read the light novel.

Not as exciting as the Spring season (Season of Trap and lolis) but I'll do with reverse trap, Hideyoshi, loli basketball club and a loli detective (Victorica?)! I also enjoyed all the previews and thoughts you guys gave!

    • Seems like you like your lolis lol. Seems to be quite a few of them here this season.

A lot of people seem to be high on Baka to Test, was it really that good? The artstyle sort of pushes me away
My recent post Sekaiichi Hatsukoi 10

    • Yea, summer doesn't have the same 'oomph' as spring. I expect it to be like winter, with a few good shows and a couple of sleepers. I hope that's the case at least

I really need to add Baka to Test to my watch list, so many people loved the first season based on this comment section alone >_<

  • bnaks says:

ahh… summer. aside from Baka to Test (which had a fantastic first season, might i add), Usagi Drop looks VERY promising, as well as Blood-C.

Baka to Test was 50% cliche, 50% stupid, but 1000% ridiculously funny. this show really has no meaning if you had not watched the first season. it might be a little funny, but you would be scraping the bottom of the bucket trying to figure out why…

Usagi Drop looks to be the highlight of the Summer 2011 anime by far. it has even more meaning if the TRazor thinks it's promising as well ^^

can't really say too much about Blood-C, as i hadn't finished watching the previous version of Blood . but CLAMP has been on a role so i'm willing to give it a try… ah who am i kidding, i'm probably going to end up juggling every show until i get sick of it…

    • Aww, *girly giggle* thanks ^^ !

BLOOD is just entertainment value. Nothing deep or emotional – just guilty pleasure. Watch the movies as they're more concise and have better animation ;)

    • I was always under the impression that Baka to Test was one of those generic harem shows.

      Guess not
My recent post Sekaiichi Hatsukoi 10

      • bnaks says:

well, slapstick has come a long way. i've watched my fair share of lame and outright idiotic attempts at humor, but Baka to Test seems defy the majority in those cases. it came at a surprise really. i was also under the impression that the show was going to fail miserably, to be completely honest. the specials, on the other hand, were quite the opposite. i seriously hope they don't plan to recycle jokes from the first season or directly from the specials, or it WILL be a generic harem… a crappy generic harem.

then again, i have been known to laugh at stupidity (even mediocrity) when it comes to comedy. for those who love Gintama, might not enjoy School Rumble… but i love them both ^^

        • Have you ever tried Sket Dance? Not the anime, but the manga.

It's created by the mangaka of Gintama's apprentice. There are a few parallels from both so you might end up liking it too if you haven't tried it already
My recent post Sekaiichi Hatsukoi 10

          • bnaks says:

hmm… i can't seem to get into manga for some reason. been trying to remedy that… not working out like i'd hoped. but i'll give it a try. thanks for the recommendation ^^

            • Scratch that, if you want to get into manga, read Eyeshield 21 first XD

              • bnaks says:

oh em gee… i already started reading the first chapter lol.

as for Eyeshield, does the plot noticeably differ from the anime? i've actually gotten pretty far if that isn't the case. to my understanding, most adaptations, be it from manga to anime or vice versa, have key differences… so i was hesitant to pick up a lot of material.

blah… it's ok, i am enjoying SKET dance so far. i don't think i could get into Eyeshield if i have prior knowledge from the anime series -_-

yes, i'm one of those ^^

                • The Sket Dance manga is pretty slow burn for me. It gets much better after the first few chapters. After that it’s smooth sailing.

The Eyeshield 21 manga is vastly superior to the anime adaptation. Even if you know certain bits, it’s done in a much better way. Plus, it has one of the best art in manga, even though it’s a bit rough at the start. Even if you’ve seen the anime, you should check out the manga cos the anime doesn’t end properly. The manga has more EPIC moments and there are a lot of stuff missing in the anime.

I’m glad that you like Sket Dance though, I love the manga.

  • Oh look. More ecchi and lolis.

Is it me, or does the next season look more tedious than the last.

    Definites for me:

    Natsume Yuujinchou
    Usagi Drop

    Possibilities

    Appleseed
    Blood C
    No. 6

Everything else just looks like everything else, including the loli detective (Tantei Opera Milky Holmes, Gosick), so I'll probably skip most of the shows.

Given that the majority of anime fans are now over the age of 25 and are generally gainfully employed, why is there only one show this season for that demographic? No wonder the industry is in crisis.

    @ TRazor

Great post. Well done dude. Very well done.

    • In all honesty, the last season had double the amount of shows as this one, so it probably contained more ecchi and lolis than this.

Wow, we picked similar shows…again! No wonder our comparability on MAL is high.

If Usagi Drop gets more than 30% votes, then I'll be writing a continuation of that "Role of Parents" post.

THANKS ^^! It took me several hours to make those pictures for each show. And don't even get me started on the tedious process involved in Photoshopping the synopsis into each of those. Uggh… Haha, just kidding, I just wrote. Bass, the admin of this site, did all the heavy lifting.

I'll catch you Monday eve on TGS!

Thanks for the post, really like it. It so organized and detailed. I think these are the series that I'm going to check out:

Ikoku Meirono Croisee – because it has some nice art
Blood-C – I like how the lead character looks like and sword girls are hot.
    No. 6 – because I like dramas
Kami-saman Memo-chou – I like opening music and the art looks nice
Nyanpire the Animation – simply because I like Nekos

  • Now I see why it took you this long for a summer preview, Bass. This post is awesome. And look at all those people! XD

Baka to Test is a must watch for me (TRazor shouldn't brushed it off just like that) and I since I'm such a studio fag/seiyuu fag, I'm gonna watch Idolm@ster and Uta no Prince as well. Judge me! :P

And judging from the vote results, looks like noitaminA still has that charm to make us want to see the anime that they picked. I can't seem to enjoy C though >_>

Would posting the summer preview now really be considered long? xD There's about 3 weeks till it begins.

      • i said long because he and I kinda started talking doing the summer preview at the same time. Mine was up sooner by a few days.

    • Thankfully this took less time than the last one, cos everyone knows how the process goes now. It was really efficient haha/

And wow, yet another Baka to Test advocate. I misjudged that show completely then

  • Mad Chemist says:

Welp, new season. Honestly it feels weaker than the Spring, and there just aren’t a lot of shows that catch my interest, but I know I’m going to check out both Noitamina shows – I’ve heard some good things about Usagi Drop and the premise sounds great, and I like dystopia stories so No. 6 sounds interesting, though I hope the show is able to cover everything it needs to in Noitamina’s short runtime. Blood-C will likely get a try as well, my Blood experience is pretty much just BtLV and two episodes of Plus, but the franchise is good at action and I’m getting a pretty good feeling about this one. Penguin Drum fascinates me as well, partially because we know so little about it. I’ve never actually seen Utena but Ikuhara’s reputation and my own love of weird shows has me interested. I might check others, but those are the big ones I plan on watching.

And yeah, nthing the compliments about the post. I like the use of pictures and general organization of opinions, especially since everyone has something different to say about the shows on display. Very nice way to discuss the new season.

    • It's definitely weaker than spring, though I guess that was to be expected since everyone wants to be out in the sun and catching up with family ala Summer Wars haha.

I'm definitely gonna check out Blood-C, if only for the look and feel of the show. It's good to know that I don't have to watch the first season beforehand either, I hate going in blind into a show that's going into a sequel.

Penguindrum has potential to be a sleeper, mostly cos I know nothing about it at all lol. I hope it surprises us, in a good way. I really want to see it's art direction.

And thanks for taking the time to comment XD

Wow! Looks great nice graphics! :D

Looking forward to a few shows this coming summer! Mostly No.6 and Sacred seven look the most fun not sure what I am blogging yet but a few shows carry over into summer like Nichijou! So yeah.

  • Sexy graphics as always, Bass and the Seki-dan~ I'm actually pretty hyped for Summer, there seems to be a good crop of shows as long as you're not blinded by big-boobed samurai ladies. I'm really interested in Kamisama Dolls and as a longtime fan of BakaTest, I have yet another show to look forward to. Also…WHAT IS UP WITH MAWARU PENGUINDRUM?! I know next to nothing about it. :/

    • Tofu says:

Would it be awarded the most intriguing show of summer OC? xD I'll be checking it out since I'm curious as to what it's about.

    • Nothing wrong with a show that gives advice on growing beautiful breasts lol. It's much better than sucking breasts for power, by a long shot.

Mawaru Penguindrum is gonna be the sleeper hit/darkhorse like Level E. You heard it here first (I hope)

some are a bit nyeh but we'll see how we go! :)

and i just HAVE to mention:

    AWESOME digital art skills, Bass!~

    always a highlight for me!~ :D

    • Kyo was busy cooking up Metanorn's Summer Review. If I had said the same things here, would have totally uncool and I love my SJ family. xD

    • That's pretty much my entire watch list, give or take a few shows. Hopefully they don't disappoint us, cos Spring has been amazing for me XD
My recent post Sekaiichi Hatsukoi 10

  • Awesome graphics as usual, Bass! I’m definitely looking forward to Natsume, No.6, Quon, Kamisama Dolls, Dantalian no Shoka, Kamisama Memou-chou and Usagi Drop.

But definitely, this Summer is much more promising than last year’s with something for everybody.

    • I can't remember what came out last summer but yea, there should be a few here that hold good potential. Our watchlists are nearly the same, hopefully it's gonna live up to my hopes.

Then again, if less shows are good, I can save bandwidth. Spring has been bleeding me dry >_<
My recent post Sekaiichi Hatsukoi 10

      • At least the titles weren’t as extensive as this year. But of course, there were a few postponements in Spring due to earthquake and a spillover to Summer and Fall. I’m hoping the best from our list but who knows which will shine and which will go to doom. >.>

  • Meshedi says:

Let me first say great presentation.
Summer seems all fresh and new other than a few sequels. I am going to follow a few new titles i know nothing about like Usagi drop, kami sama, no.6 and morita and of course baka to test. Nothing more to say other than hope they all are good.

    • Thanks :)

Yea, summer seems to be pretty good in terms of originality. Not many sequels and the manga adaptations are tasteful, only one shounen adaptation/sequel in sight.

I hope it lives up to our expectations, especially for me since it's my first full-time summer with anime

Thanks trzr23 for collaborating with us!!

  • Amazing presentation. I stopped waiting for Random Curiosity's one and this one is the best I've seen thus far.

    • Funny you should say that, cos RC just released theirs just today haha. Rabbit Poets and THAT also recently released their own versions as well. I added it to the "Other Previews" section so you can check the links there.

And thanks for dropping by and checking ours out :D
