Ao no Exorcist 14
So I’ve recently come to the conclusion that nothing, yes NOTHING happens in Ao no Exorcist on a week to week basis. Ideally you need to take 3-5 episodes before you have anything substantial to talk about and this week is no exception. Now don’t get me wrong I know this is a trait of long running manga to anime ports especially in the case of Naruto, Bleach and One Piece. I’m pretty sure the last two episodes of Naruto have been the same three flashback sequences just from a different persons perspective. However I am getting away from the point. I am seriously wondering why they licensed Ao no Exorcist for anime when they have hardly any material, its just going to ruin (from what I am told) is an amazing manga.
Then again this seems to be my opinion of anime in general currently. The industry is in trouble, not enough sales etc etc. So I can get behind trying to get good stuff out there. So why do they fund all of the utterly-rubbish shows. This is one reason why I offer a slight bit of support for this censorship law. Now of course it is a stupid law, it is way to vague and is clearly one man’s hate of a rival story telling medium BUT it is getting rid of pointless fan-service and again let me clarify, I don’t mind fan-service in moderation but if like ‘Freezing’ you need to have breasts or panties in every other shot you clearly aren’t confident with your story and at least the ban is helping here, admittedly it’s a bit too strong at present but hey here’s hoping they loosen the ropes.
So before this rant goes on any longer and I end up writing a totally different post lets get back to Ao no Exorcist and the episode entitled ‘Fun Camp’
Summer is upon our heroes and in good old fashioned style it’s time for more training but this time with a juicy prize… the eligibility to go on missions, however there are only three mission passes and whilst I suspect this is a trick and instead the teachers are expecting three teams to form or that everyone will fail. The task? Well they have to go out into the forest at night, find a lantern (there are only three, surprise surprise) and bring it back to camp. On a sidenote the forest is full of ‘minor demons’ with Amaimon and Mephy-chan camping near by watching the whole thing. Amaimon wants to get in on the action but Shura knows they are there.
Despite Shura telling him not to use his powers, Rin loses control of his flames again (within 10 minutes of the test starting) and again it’s Shiemi being in danger that sets him off. Suguro shows up just after Rin manages to control himself but not before noticing the ominous blue haze. Meanwhile Konekomaru discovers a lantern and realizes that there’s no way any of them can win the challenge alone, and everyone except Izumo and the other one ends up as a team. At the same time one of singal flares is set off and Yukio charges off the rescue.
To finish the episode off the others devise a cunning plan to transport the lantern back to camp but before they succeed Rin accidentally destroys a seal, releasing a giant Moth…
In all honestly not much happened in this episode, it was more of a set up episode for all the action that we are gonna get next week. All we really learnt this week is that Shima is deathly afraid of bugs. Yukio is jealous of the relationship between Rin and Shiemi, though she doesn’t really pick up on it.

What they should have done is either wait until the manga had progressed before making the anime, or they should have gone in with an anime-original plan, like Bones did with the original FMA. The pacing and fillers are killing this show although I still like it well enough.
That said, its Blu-Ray sales are high, so I guess A-1 has done something right. xD
Agree with the rant but not the part about this anime. I know that Ao no Excorcist can be like shounen anime most of the time but i really enjoyed all of the episodes (except the squid episode).
you have to admit, 14 episodes into the series and most would expect to be hyped about… well, something. there really isn't a hook that reels viewers in, aside from a few typical shounen bouts here and there. hopefully it'll pick up soon.
personally i quite enjoy it. Though, it is moving quite slow for 14 episodes. oh well, at least we get some laugh out of it. Slice of life is my genre so i guess i dont mind it too much. :D
