Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira 01

Little did they know Shion is planning to slaughter them all later.

I don’t think I’m even going to bother with a summary for this since the entire episode was mostly Keiichi, Tomitake, Oiishi, and Irie fantasizing (there really just isn’t much to summarize, you know?)

Going into this, I was pretty much expecting one of Higurashi’s more lighthearted episodes, and I didn’t really mind that. Higurashi’s biggest strength has never been it’s comedy, but it has had some pretty funny little episodes every now and then with the cast just acting silly (like the pool episode in Rei. That was hilarious even with the fanservice.) This, however, was just…an abomination. I will live the rest of my life forever unable to unsee that image of Rika wiping windows with her ass as Tomitake snaps pictures like a sick lolicon. For like 20 minutes straight it was nothing but fanservice, nosebleeds, and more fanservice, and it just seemed to drag on and on. At the very least though, I give DEEN props for not discriminating:

There were a few lulz here and there, and I thought it was kind of funny how they parodied the first episode with Keiichi in the phone booth, but for the most part it really just didn’t feel like Higurashi.

I will give them credit for one thing though: this was higher budget than anything in the Higurashi franchise so far. There was nary a derp in sight. For me though, it was a bit weird to get used to this drastic leap in quality when I’m so accustomed to the way it usually looks, but I can’t complain about it.

Overall, this OVA was shit. Fans of the series should be outraged that they dared to create this monstrosity and call it “Higurashi.” As psgels put it, this was absolutely an insult, and I can only hope that the remaining three episodes don’t pull the same crap. I’m not hoping for a serious story, but I’d prefer to see my favorite characters with some dignity at the very least…

Oyashiro-sama will get them for this.

  I…. I can't believe I actually watched this. I was expecting magical cat girls, which is horrible enough. This was ten times worse. I should have known it was all going to go to hell when Eiko Shimamiya didn't preform the opening, but still, this was terrible.
  The only good thing about it was that the animation quality was waaaaay better than the original higurashi. Oh, and I guess the scene with Satoshi was pretty amusing too. Hopefully the rest of the OVAs aren't so heavy on the pointless fanservice.

    Eiko Shimamiya would have at least made this more bearable.
    Magical cat girls would be waaaay better than this. I wish they would animate the Natsumi/Akira arc instead of this crap, but it's probably just going to be more fanservice. >.<
    But lol at the yaoi. At least DEEN is being fair. XD

  As a die-hard Higurahsi fan I've been debating on whether to torture myself by watching this or not, but… I think maybe I'll save myself the heartache of watching some of my favorite characters demean themselves.

  Even though Rei wasn't very good, at least the fanservice wasn't ridiculously over the top, and some of the episodes tied to the story arcs.

    I know how you feel. Watching DEEN do this to Higurashi was just…painful.
    I thought Rei was alright, but this doesn't even bother trying to be funny. It's just boobs and yaoi and Rika's butt. It's definitely a good idea to skip it.

  hahahah yes! I Saw this last night and was like whoa this is basically a Higurashi hentai! Well almost lol the first 20mins were great I couldn't stop laughing, but I really wished it was the Higurashi we all were used to. Ah well I think the days of bloody loli violence is at the end for this series, at least we got to see Hanyuu again xD

    LOL I had the same thought. They may as well have just made it a Higurashi hentai. XD Haha more Hanyuu is always good, but I wish she didn't have to be reduced to wearing paper kimonos while Keiichi shoots water at her…*shakes fists at DEEN*

  I gotta agree that the only parts that really made me laugh was Satoshi mimicking Rena's yogurt fantasy in a bunny costume (Yuu Kobayashi alone can make anything awesome ^_^) and the homage to Keiichi's telephone booth call from the 1st arc. The next episode looks like a magical girl spoof, so it probably won't be getting much better >.>
