Tantei Opera Milky Holmes OVA
Ah, Milky Holmes. I remember while it was airing thinking “this looks like moe garbage” before even trying it, only to check it out about three weeks in and instantly love it. In fact, to my surprise, Milky Holmes brilliantly subverts the moe genre, which is the exact opposite of what I thought it would be. After the famous “I’ll give you a hint: it’s not my finger” episode, Milky Holmes became one of my favorite comedies of all time. So how does the OVA measure up? Let’s take a look!
First of all, the appearance of Nipple-sensei is depressingly scarce. Which is sort of a shame, because the few short scenes he was actually in were, as usual, the highlight of the episode for me (there’s just something about those nipples…) Instead, this was an episode that focused mostly on Kokoro.
The G4, to me, have always seemed like the least interesting and least funny part of the show. I mean, does anyone even remember the names of the other G4 members? In a show that does such a good job subverting tropes, they’re the only ones who feel like walking clichés. The absolute worst offender of this is that stupid deadpan girl who occasionally makes insulting remarks. Kokoro herself is amusing to watch, but the others just aren’t that funny. So yeah, just about every scene that involved them ended up being a bit “meh.”
Still, despite that, this was a pretty fun episode. For Milky Holmes standards, it could have been better, but it wasn’t bad. It wasn’t as full of lulz as I remembered the series being, but it still had the same high energy and quirkiness as usual. One thing about Milky Holmes that I always liked was how it wasn’t afraid to just get weird, and it really showed here that the creators are just as insane as usual. Heck, just the screenshots to the side make me wonder what the writers have been smoking (and where I can get some….)
If this is any indication of how the second season will be, then I’m definitely looking forward to it. If you’re one of those people who saw that a second season has been announced but have been on the fence about checking out season one, I can honestly say you’re missing out if you don’t. Little girls get beat up by bears, teachers walk around with hard nipples protruding from their chests, CORDELIA IS FUCKING AWESOME, and the sheer insanity of all of the scenarios these girls get themselves in is sure to leave you laughing with every episode.
OVA Rating: 8.5/10- Not the best we’ve seen from Milky Holmes, but still very enjoyable.
oh yes, this show was so underrated and definitely earns its place within the comedy genre. it was one of those shows where i couldn't wait for the next episode to be released. it may seem like a failure for those who haven't attempted to try, but i can honestly say (like Ms Elyon mentions) that you will be sorely missing out… i recommend picking up the first season immediately; season 2 will/better be good… no more Baka to Test disappointments please > – <

My thoughts exactly! Milky Holmes really deserves more love. Too many people are turned off by how moe it appears on the outside without realizing how much they're missing out on. >.<
Ugh, I seriously hope the second season doesn't end up like the second season of Baka Test. I would be very depressed if that happened….:<
