OVA Thoughts: TWGOK, Higurashi Kira, and Sekaiichi Hatsukoi

With the new season creeping up on us, it won’t be long before Sekijitsu’s front page is covered in first impressions posts. But before we crack some of the Fall anime, I figured it was probably time to tackle some of the OVA’s that have aired this month, so today I bring you my impressions on The World God Only Knows: Yonin to Idol, Sekaiichi Hatsukoi: Yoshino Chiaki no Baai, and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira!

The World God Only Knows: Yonin To Idol

Summary: Chihiro, Ayumi, Elsea, and some side character decide to try to form a light music club at school for their newly formed band to practice. However, the teacher says he’ll allow it only if they all get 100% on the next English test, which is a seemingly impossible task with Elsea in the group. And thus, it’s up to brainiac Keima to tutor them!

Thoughts:

K-ON! meets TWGOK…and oddly, I am okay with this.
I thought it was nice to see that Chihiro actually went through with her plans to form a band instead of abandoning the idea, and it really showed just how much Keima affected her and her ability to persevere. I also thought it was really sweet when Kanon recognized Keima, even though I’m not the biggest fan of her. As Keima learned in the second season with Ayumi, even though everyone forgets what he’s done for them, it still stays within them somewhere.
That being said, this did suffer from the typical “anime band suddenly gets good” syndrome that seems to plague all shows that have to do with music. Well, okay, I should probably rephrase that as “anime band suddenly gets better” syndrome, since I wouldn’t exactly call that musical insert “good”, but you get the idea. This is one of the big reasons why I don’t like concert episodes (K-ON! is an exception, dammit!)
Overall though, it was still a pretty fun OVA. It featured some of the better characters (Chihiro and Ayumi), and it still had that same energy of the first and second season. I could be mistaken, but that girl who appeared at the end was Yui, right? I wouldn’t be surprised if this was their way of hinting that a third season is on the way (or maybe that’s just wishful thinking?)

OVA Rating: 8/10- Fun and amusing to watch, but nothing particularly amazing here.

Sekaiichi Hatsukoi: Yoshino Chiaki no Baai

Summary: Chiaki goes to visit his parents with Hatori and blah blah blah. THEY MAKE OUT IN THE END.

Thoughts:

That awkward moment when you realize your gay lover’s little sister has an obvious crush on you and his mom is trying to set you two up completely unaware that you’ve been having buttsecks every night for the past year….
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! This was a surprise. I didn’t like the Chiaki/Hatori episodes when the series aired, but this was just too hilarious. Especially when Chiaki’s sister came out in a frilly dress and you know Hatori’s thinking “DO. NOT. WANT….unless it’s on Chiaki…” But come on now, Chinatsu. It should have been so obvious what was going on between them.
I thought it was odd that they kept having really strange fanservice of Chinatsu and Chiaki’s mom though. Like zooming in to Chiaki’s mom’s boobs and stuff. Who is that meant to appeal to? The audience of straight males? LOL. I’m sorry, DEEN, but it’s a bit late for that.
Anyway, unlike the first OVA which was a prequel to Ritsu’s story, this served as a nice aftermath to Chiaki’s story. I found it a little disappointing though that, in a whole year, very little has actually changed between them. It also still feels like their story lacks closure, but I guess the second season will fix that.

OVA Rating: 8/10- Full of lulz, awkward family conversations, and dudes making out. What’s not to love?

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira 02

Summary: Rika and Satoko are transported to another parallel world for some inexplicable reason where Rika has to transform into a mahou shoujo and fight evil. Some fights ensue, there’s a magical mist that turns people into psychos, Keiichi and Satoshi have officially come out of the closet, and for whatever reason Hanyuu is a fairy. Yeah….

Thoughts:

I feel like such a fool for wasting 1.2 gigs on the 1080p version of this crap, but the Higurashi fan in me just can’t help but want to see my favorite characters well-animated for a change even if I know what’s coming. Seriously, where the heck was this budget when the GOOD Higurashi aired?

This episode was a bit of an improvement over the first, but it was still pretty bad. It didn’t demean the cast with ass-windows or boob-licking like the previous one did, but it was still chock full of fanservice, and the story they came up with was just…boring. And see, the thing with Rei was that, even if the fanservice episodes weren’t that good, they were at least reminiscent of the real Higurashi as opposed to just being utterly abysmal like this.

I have to wonder though why they don’t use the plenty of good material they have for an OVA. The Higurashi franchise is HUGE. The Demon Exposing arc is a one-shot and would have fit perfectly into four episodes, but instead they decide to waste the opportunity on this kind of garbage.

OVA Rating: 6/10- Booooring, reduces all of the characters to fanservice props, and is ultimately a bunch of nonsense. Not to mention THE OP IS BLASPHEMY. Eiko Shimamiya WHERE?!
