Weekly Art – Fate/Zero

And with the end of the fall season, so begins the Fate/Zero drought. I don’t think Fate/Zero was the best show of the fall season (that, hands-down, belongs to Un-Go), but not only was it my favorite, it was the first show to turn me into a franchise fanboy.

To pass the time, here’s an art post, featuring all seven teams, plus an assortment of group pictures. There are no spoilers here. If you see any unfamiliar characters, I can promise they don’t show up in Fate/Zero. And, no, you shouldn’t figure out Berserker’s identity in this post. There’s just one picture of him without the mask, and he’s genderbent (to those who really want to avoid spoilers, that’s the last picture in the group section). Genderbent? Yeah, I should warn you some pictures here are a bit crazy.

Some stats about Fate/Zero on Pixiv, the website where I got all these images. Keep in mind that most Fate/Zero artists are (very talented) fangirls.

1: There are over 16,000 pictures of Fate/Zero on Pixiv, making it one of the most popular 2011 series. It beats out AnoHana (8,000 pictures) and Steins;Gate (11,000 pictures) for example. It lags far behind Tiger & Bunny (over 95,000 pictures) and Madoka Magica (over 97,000 pictures).

2: Saber is the most popular Fate/Zero servant on Pixiv with over 3,300 pictures (by most popular, I mean the most pictures tagged with her name plus “Fate/Zero”). Lancer and Archer lag behind as second and third respectively. It’s common to draw the three knight classes (Saber, Lancer, and Archer) together, usually in some kind of love triangle.

3: Assassin is the least popular servant on Pixiv, lagging over 400 pictures behind Berserker, the second least popular. Well, it’s the job of Assassin to stay out of limelight, so job well done.

4: Kariya Matou is the most popular Fate/Zero master on Pixiv with over 2,500 images, and the second most popular character. Waver follows 200 pictures behind as the second most popular master. It’s ironic that Kariya has the most pictures though because (1) I’m pretty sure he’s had the least amount of screentime and (2) well…

5: Kariya’s rival, Tokiomi Tohsaka, is the least popular Fate/Zero master on Pixiv with about 800 images (unless we’re counting Sola, but let’s not). You may or may not win the war, Kariya, but at least you’ve beat your rival here. Irony is compounded by the fact that Archer, Tokiomi’s servant, is among the most popular servants. Oh, and his hot daughter is popular, too.

6: According to Pixiv, all Fate/Zero characters are gay. I kept most of the shipping pictures out, for better or for worse.

7: Renn spent eight hours making this post. It sucks being a fanboy.

Anyhoo, onto the pictures if you’re not there already. Hit it!

GROUPS

Thanks for reading and viewing, everyone. To those who want to see the original (and larger) images, credits are behind the cut. Sorry they’re messy; I would organize them, but our Visual Editor isn’t working, and it would take at least half an hour to organize them neatly.

Also, I realize that most people use Danbooru or Zerochan, but would anyone be interested in guide to Pixiv for the Japanese illiterate? It is more time-consuming, but you can (1) credit the original artist and (2) find fanart you can’t find anywhere else. I’m not an expert (and I don’t speak Japanese), but I do know a few tips that some seem to miss.

Who are your favorite Fate/Zero characters?

Renn (or Renn Biber) is a student, masochist, and Pikachu. Hardcore about animu. Oh, hey, that rhymes! Passes time freezing in Canada, or playing real games like Tetris.

It’s true though. All the characters are gay. Speaking about tips for pixiv, wouldn’t mind some :)

    • Hmm… I'd say only 5/6ths of the characters are gay. I can think of a few exceptions to the rule. xD

I might get the post up after the first episodes air. We'll see. :)

  • 8 hours well spent I'd say :)

  • You have my everlasting love for this post! <3
My recent post Kimi to Boku – 13 [END]

'According to Pixiv, all characters are gay'

LOL what happens to the rule 'all anime characters are bisexual unless stated otherwise'? xD
Thanks for the lovely post! I noticed Fate/Zero has a lot of artworks in the daily rankings so I thought it was popular so this confirmed my thought. I think when it finishes it can reach Madoka popularity.

    • I hadn't heard of that rule, but that does explain a lot. xD Merci!

I'm glad you like it. :D Since Tiger & Bunny reached Madoka's popularity, there's no reason Fate/Zero won't. It does have another cour to go.

Wowzers, thanks for the stats! You should definitely make a Pixiv guide. Pixiv is really intimidating to some people, and it kind of bugs me when I see an awesome pic on Tumblr and the source says zerochan or danbooru, or even worse… no source at all >_<

Team Rider & Team Berserker, so much uguuu alksnfknadsf ♥♥♥

My favorite character is Loli Rin.

    • That bugs me, too. If you don't credit the original artist, you're borderline stealing.

Those are my favorite teams, too, but I prefer teenage Rin. Though Loli Rin has great hair. xD
