Kimi ni Todoke – Chapter 71
Having been a fan of Kimi ni Todoke since back when the anime first came out, there are a few trends I was able to pick up on that occur every so often. The most notable of these is how the series handles longer dramatic moments. While the series is normally light-hearted enough to not need much drama, we still get longer moments that linger for several chapters and bring the mood down a lot. In other series this might be the sign of a strong downward shift overall, but here it’s actually the opposite. The larger changes in the story, such as Sawako becoming friends with Ayane and Chizu or hooking up with Kazehaya, were all preceded by downward shifts. This is part of what made the final scenes, and the series overall, feel so much better and more uplifting after they were over.
Alright, that’s one paragraph of purely serious discussion. Now excuse me while I commence squeeing like a girl.
Oh God oh God, I was totally expecting this to take a couple more months to get to, if we ever got to it at all. Back when I started reading, I had this idea that most shojo held off on kissing and other stuff, since all I read were this and Fruits Basket. The more I ended up reading, the quicker I realized it was this series that was the oddball, and the more I wanted the pace to quicken. Ever since then I thought about how this moment would eventually play out, and it’s actually pretty close to how I expected. Actually, I don’t think there are many other ways we could have gotten to this point.
There is one thing that became clear to me after looking over this scene. No matter how nervous and scared Sawako and Kazehaya were in the last few chapters, this was what they really wanted. Their big problem was getting the courage to actually make a move without hurting the other person. It’s the same problem they had back before they hooked up, and I suppose on some level it never went away. From their kiss, it was not only made clear to us that they always wanted to be closer if they could be, but more importantly, they made it clear to each other. Even the way they kiss is important, because they fact that they keep going for several pages (again, so adorable) lets us see how comfortable they can be together if they really, truly want it.
I should be wondering where things can go from here, but I’m still just blown away that we got to see this. I really didn’t expect it, considering that the last chapter wasn’t even about these two. I do think we’ll be getting a chapter or two where everyone discusses where things go from here (since there’s more than one couple now). After that I can’t say, though I’m hoping there’s a scene of Sawako going to class grinning like a maniac and scaring everyone. I think things really should get back to normal now, which is great because I’ve missed moments like that. Maybe it wasn’t until now that I realized how much.
