Hidamari Sketch X Honeycomb [Ep 3]
A typhoon hits Hidamari Apartments and school’s back with (emergency) drills galore!

Typhoon Blues
The interaction between the six in this segment was quite enjoyable and relaxing. From the impromptu kitchen-raiding party to playing cards, you can really feel the friendship between them. Out of all the jokes though, the weatherman one is my favourite. Such mundane and relatable observations are just what I look for in a series like Hidamari.
Oh, we also get a look at the landlady too. She seems like a likable person compared to the stereotypical grumpy landlady-slash-grandma. I wonder if she has appeared before in the show…
Yuno’s summer-long art project was also quite telling of her determination. If you want to get good at something, you have to practice, practice and of course, practice. She’s been a slightly boring optimist since the start of this season, but I think I’m beginning to see her in a slightly more positive light.

First Day Blues
I was expecting some focus on what the art students did at Hidamari, but I guess that wasn’t the case for this episode. Instead we get even more ludicrous cosplay from Yoshinoya! This time, she doesn’t even bother explaining her outfit. In fact, she seems to er…show off her curvy cosplay, fully aware that she’s in bloomers and a seifuku. I wonder how anyone would be able to cosplay as Yoshinoya with her having so many outfits.
The best scene in the episode, however, definitely goes to Miyako and her improvised ‘hanky’. If I were one of the dudes at the back, I’d call that moment the zenith of my high-school life. Yeah, I’m developing a crush on her, so maybe that’s why it’s my #1 scene for this episode. XD On the earthquake scene Y U NO ANIMATE, SHAFT!? I’d love to see the eternally upbeat Yuno get shaken and stirred for once.
Speaking of crushes, do you think the principal has one on Yoshinoya? Sunset filtering through the windows, an empty classroom and two people of the opposite sex together…Sounds like a classic romantic setup to me. Plus, the principal even twitches when he’s near her. I‘m not sure if it’s just a habit of his, but I definitely got a romantic vibe here.
Anyway, Yoshinoya’s abrupt silence to the principal’s requests was just priceless. It looks like the right to cosplay is in her employment contract. XD
For some insight on the smart but hidden camerawork in the episode, head on over to Ivlln’s post on Metanorn.
Overall, I thought this episode was an improvement thanks to the focus being shifted from Yuno (I really have something against her, don’t I?). The steady joke-rate was also a plus, making this the best episode of the three for me. I really hope they step it up for later episodes. What do you think of this week’s Hidamari episode?
